So I read along time ago that there was aluminum rimmed spare tires for our cars. Trying to save some weight finally, Ive done some searching. But now only created more questions....

1. I now see there are two options... 1LE-10spoke, N64 solid painted.

2. I see some mixed info on which will clear the rear PBR's.

3. Never did see a true number on how much each weights. Anyone here have one?

4. Next is which one fits in the small opening of the vert trunk. The one I have now I have to damn near pull my arms out of the sockets to get it out the hole. Laughing

When was the last time you've needed it? Buy a AAA membership and toss it. Ultimate weight savings. New cars dont even come with a spare anymore.

I'm not going to carry a spare in my Firebird either. Just driving it around town.

At the risk of jinxing myself, in ten years of driving all types of vehicles in all types of conditions on and off road I have never had a tire fail to the point where I was not able to make it to a shop.

The only time I carry a spare is when I am towing in a rural area.

Also, if you are lowered or have non-stock brakes a mini spare is useless anyway.

This whole post is a jinx... The only time I've ever needed a spare I really needed it bad. Blew a tire out on the truck at the Sawtooth Berry fields between Mt Adams and Mt St Helens. The car's spare has never been out. Probably flat lol.

I have not needed a spare on THIS car, but I have needed spares plenty of times in my life.

Well I had the 10 spoke inflatable spare. I know it would not fit on the ls1 fronts. I read that it would fit if you had a 1.5" spacer (i would check that number). I cant remember for sure if it would fit over the pbr rears but I didn’t want to run the different size tires and wear out the posi anyway.

The spare tire I am trying to find is the 98-2002 f-body. It will fit in your tire well and it is already inflated. It is steel though and not aluminum.

I question if it would fit the vert trunk. The inflateable one takes some cussing to get through it.

Funny this thread came up, I had a 3/8" x 4" bolt in my right rear tire yesterday. Pretty happy I had a spare with me.

I had two blow outs in the wagon in the same week last year. Sure glad I had a spare then. Wink

Some stats in these 2 articles. 70% of all spares never see the pavement.. 13% of all new cars sold last month did not come with a spare.

While its definately nice to have when you need it, if you have good tires you normally wont. I've only needed to use a spare once since 86, on any of my cars. And really, if you're dressed to go out do you want to be changing a tire?

No I don't hate spares, but on a performance car that you use infrequently and worried about weight savings. Why not ditch it?

After all this talk.. now i'm definatly jinxed.. Cause I dont have AAA either.. Laughing

I'm never going to put the old dirty tire and rim inside my Firebird anyway so it does no good to have the spare with me. My wife will bring me supplies and take home the old tire in her car. If I go out of town then odds are I'm going to the track and have the car on a trailer anyway. That's the best plan when you're 3 hours from home and purposely driving the car like you stole it.

I do carry full size spares on my other rigs, including the trailer. I put a tire carrier on the Jeep just so I could have a full size spare. For me, making it to the next gas station isn't sufficient. I want to be able to drive home.

A little off topic but I've been noticing a lot of racers these days taking the spare wheels and putting front runner tires on them and using them as cheap skinnies to go along with their slicks. With that said, what spares will actually fit our cars with any kind of big brake upgrade (LS1, C5, etc). The most popular that I've seen are GTO spares as they are 17's.

Seriously. Keep your tires in good repair, aired up, etc and unless you're being dumb and don't watch the road for that giant piece of whatever that you runover and ruin your tire..... you don't need a spare.

I will carry a spare for LONG road trips.

Otherwise.... AAA gold... way cheaper period. If I need a spare, it's excessive. Again, keep your tires in a good shape.

I see weird tire shredded blow outs everyday on the freeway and seriously wonder WTF did they let go and why?!

You do know they are usually only rated to about 45-55mph correct?

That's the tire, not the wheel. They put light weight drag front tires on usually.

You think we would let that fly at my drag strip? Smack! lol. That would be just asking for a lawsuit. Yeah people put skinnies, front runners, whatever-you-wanna-call-em tires on the wheels.

I got a screwdriver ( yup you read that right) in my front right tire lol long story short don't trust Co workers to watch their own tools, one guy got pissed at a smart start that went crazy on him and pitched his Phillips across the shop, landed perfectly at an angle in the removable pole hole ( idk the real name for it) I pulled my car up the ramp to check my oil and wham! Of all the things I've gotten I'm my tires that was a new one, like a single spike strip and I hit the right spot of course

Borrowed his truck and got a new one at les Schwab, spare wasn't an option because the one time I used it it blew on me. I keep a gas can in there now
