It's haunted, and the ghost hates me.

Today 3rd and presumably 4th went out. 1st 2nd and reverse all work fine, but 3 just acts like it is in neutral. Hard to tell about 4th it doesn't even try to shift into 4.
Fluid is at the full mark when checked at normal operating temp, car idling in park.
TV cable is attached at both ends.
700r4 BTW, but you all probably figured that.

Vacuum?
Servo?
Ghost now locking me out of everything above 40 mph along with the rear hatch?
Just 22 years old and long overdue to go kaput?

A high-mileage 700R4 that sat for a long time and then was run low on fluid? I'll give you one guess.

Time for a T5.

T5

That sounds spendy. Not out of the question, but spendy.

What all is needed to do that swap? ballpark price range for that?

There will also be a bunch of other stuff.
pedals etc. and a ton more work.
Trying to get a feel if an upgraded 700r4 or T5 is the better way to go on a budget.
T5 is what I want, but we don't always get what we want. A quick search shows an entire auto can be had for between 1200 and 1500. That is a direct straight swap and much easier.
But a T5 is. . .well a T5

There is an 87 iroc by my house for sale for 700. T5. Cheaper to buy a whole car and take what you need and part out rest. Posi rear end.

Well now that might be a way to go. Either way it will have to wait for income tax return. 700 is a possibly a good deal if it runs and doesnt need to be rebuilt.

Car don't run so well, kid put fan on backwards and overheated and has quite a knock. I was at one point in time thinking of buying it for tranny and rear and then parting rest, but wife put a stop to that real quick.

well, still gonna take some homework I think.
How compatible is an 87 transmission to a 91? What I mean is specifically about the way the speedo gets it's info, the 91 is electronic, is the 87 also electronic or is it cable driven? swapping the entire gauge cluster is one thing, but then the tach is fubar.
Is my new SD harness compatible?
ECU and memcal? or is the tranny completely removed from the ECU and all of its functions.
What I'm getting at is new 700r4 is a straight R/R, I know all of the parts are with a donor car, but how many pitfalls are there with swapping an 87 into a 91?

You'll need a cas from a 90+ Camaro or 87+ bird t5

The swap is super easy and can be done in a weekend. Ecm doesn't care.

The T-5 swap is fairly easy and relatively cheap too. The Pick-N-Pulls around here sell transmissions for $130. The pedals, flywheel, exhaust hanger, torque arm mount, bell housing, clutch fork, starter, flywheel and fluid reservoir can all be found at a junk yard. I'd suggest buying the clutch, master cylinder and slave cylinder new. I'd say you can easily do it for under $500.

If you go the manual swap route, I have pedals, hydraulics, flywheel and a clutch in my garage from the kids GTA. That is about all that is left from that car.

I am really leaning heavy towards the T5 route. A donor car would be nice, and is a possibility. Only problem with that option is having the shell laying around afterwords. Also pulling two trannies. Gathering parts sounds like a plan, all I need is to find a volunteer to lend expertise. And source all the parts.

Seems like I just did this.

I would not buy a donor car. There are not that many parts needed and they are easy to pull from wrecking yards, ect.

Also remember that everything except the transmission, bellhousing, flywheel, and clutch can come from a base-model V6 car of which there are plenty in the yards.

I would buy Mike's parts (you already have most of the drivetrain in your car, why not? Razz) and then find a transmission at a local yard.

Yep was planning on Mike's parts after having thought it over a few hours.
I don't live in a high faluttin' neighborhood, but parting out a car in the front yard will be frowned on. . . by the wife.

Have I mentioned how pleased she is now?
