So while I have my car stripped down I've decided I want to swap in a manual tranny. Just not sure what I should go with as the T5 won't withstand my new 350. Is T56 my only option? I'm also on a budget with this so let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

No offense but what truck-headed smog motor is going to kill a T5? Just get the torque arm off of it and go nuts.

Just my two cents.

I've been running a 200k+ mileage T5 behind my stout 350 for a few years now and it's still kicking. I don't even have the torque arm relocated yet. Razz

I say if you're on a budget then a T5 is the way to go and relocate the torque arm. You can buy like 5 or 6 T5s for the price of a single T56.

Sounds like you've been reading TGO and think that the T56 is god's gift to antiquated smallblocks. I destroyed a T56 with a mild TPI motor making 240 horse.

Get a T5, get the car running. You can put a T56 in later without changing the clutch when you have more funds.

How did you destroy the T56 Aaron?!?!

Stock they are good to 450 ft lb, with the basic upgrades that puts it closer to 600.

IIRC he overheated it doing a burnout at Cows and it wouldn't go into any gears until it cooled down then some things went wrong and it began popping out of gear and wouldn't go into 4th. Or something. Shrug

I wishbone'd the 3rd gear shift fork in my t56. But seriously, why use an aluminum fork?

Power shifted the 2-3 and 3-4 at WOT the day I got it all back together and it stuck in fourth. Finally got it pried out but it would always work it's way out of third after that.

Then I overheated the engine on the burnout pad at Cows '08 (bad fan relay) which caused it to get stuck in second. Let it cool off and drove it on the cruise but it shifted real chunky.

Drained fluid when I got back up here and it was badly burnt. Replaced it but it was a long slow downward spiral after that.

Started grinding going into reverse then reverse went out completely (don't pull in anywhere! Laughing). Then first started grinding and was hit-or-miss. Then fourth started grinding. When I sold it the only two gears that weren't crapped up in some way were the overdrives. Rolling EyesLaughing

T5's break because the case twists. T56's break because of crazy people driving, and no one drives crazier than I. Wink

I'll say. First drive with the new motor in the '97 vert and you were powersliding all over the place. Laughing
