Anyone here running an lt1 cam in a newer third gen?
I know that the 87 and up can use the 94-97 lt1 ca. Want to know how well it woke upm if I'm right? Just wanted to know if anyone else had run this cam or not and how much it woke up the little 305.
Thinking it would be a cheap easy mod until I get my big engine rolling.

If anyone had done this, got any vids? Razz

I think Ian's old motor had an LT1 cam with the stealth ram.

The cam in my car is similar in specs to the LT1 cam, just a hair more aggresive on the ramps.

Based on both my car and Ians car, tuned right it should be good for 225-235 rwhp regarless of heads/intake used.

John has that same longblock with TPI on it in his Trans Am now and it seems like a nice little combo. The dyno numbers were crap due to running on seven cylinders, but that's John for you. Razz

I don't think it will ever hit 235 wheel horse with TPI, though. Ian only got 225 out of it with an HSR and them darn maths are against you when the engine is peaking out 700rpm before 5252.

There was more power in Ians motor, he was PIG rich when he did 225. I did the same HP with TBI, and a beat to hell motor that has some serious blow-by issues, and probably bad compression. In a healthy 305, with a good tune, I bet both mine and Ian's combos would made 235rwhp.

With the stealthram, LT1 cam and stock log manifolds I put down 226rwhp. With LT headers and some fumbling about in the tune* I put down 240(I think? It's been a bit, either 236-240rwhp). If you can tune there is still some power left on the table.

*All I did was smooth the tables and cut a bit of fuel as demonstrated by still almost pegging the WB the second time around.

That being said, I wouldn't waste your time unless you get the cam for CHEAP. I got mine for $10 on ls1tech.

Only reason I remember how much power there was the first time was because I beat Dew by 1hp. Very Happy

Yea I have been doing some reading since I posted. Looks like the lt1 if I can grab it cheap enough would be worth it.
Otherwise I think I'm kinda liking the 08-302-8 comp cam. Not sure if I want to spend that much on this engine though.
But the lt4 seems viable, or the zz4 if only a little big in the exhaust lift at .51. At least all cam s have the same lobe separation.

Don't suppose anyone has used any of them?

Thanks ian for details Smile

Of the comp cams grinds, I always liked the specs on 08-501-8. Problem is, the .495 lift on the exaust, that is going to require the valve guides cut down. But, if you cut them down, with 1.6 RR's that would be a healthy 305 cam. The one you picked out, is pretty close, but just a little less aggresive, it would probably be a pretty good fit with a 305, but will require probably quite a bit of computer tuning to run well.

Yeah, I got Ian's old 305 witt the LT1 cam in my '86 T/A. The LT1 cam seems to work well with a mostly stock tune (BTW, Aaron, those are not Ford pink top injectors. I found the bill of sale from when the original owner ordered them. I gotta change the injector constant.) Wish I had solid dyno numbers with the TPI intake on it, but like Aaron said, my number 7 plug wire got loose of its loom and melted on the header. Didn't find it until after dyno. Sad

What was CheezX running? His 305 put down 229hp the first year I dyno'd. I did 227 and Schultz did 230 with his l98.

My '87 TPI motor with an LT1 Cam and Edelbrock carb made a mere 180rwhp.

The nice thing about that cam, is the power curve was more of a flat line than a curve. So power all the time.

Ya was talking about that at lunch yesterday with some other crewbies. I actually think Cheezy put down the 230 and mine was 229. Of course there was a decent difference in torque but the later model LB9's did real good.

I want to say he actually had a L98 cam. Its been a long time though, so my memory may be way off. The tuning, long tubes, and other little goodies he had going all worked well together on his motor.

I thought Cheezy had the stock cam in his with the longtube headers and exhaust and then his own tune at that point. Could be wrong. Maybe I could message his old man and see if he could get us the answer Laughing
