Still not a 3d gen fbody.. but some more truck project progress...
Finished doing the head machine work today.. purrrrty!
Here's the shortblock.. with new domed pistons!! The originals were flattops. Whoppin 8:1.. this will work out at 9.7:1. They're sealed power coated skirt hypers.. oughta do the job.
Here's the shortblock goin together.. and as you can see in the background the chassis is completed. Lowered, rebuilt and painted!
Motor looks like its together. .but not yet.. just mocked it up to check piston to valve clearance.. looks like i've got about an 1/8".. Its got a big Voodoo cam in it.. Also need to change the guide plates yet. The new ones use 3/8" pushrods instead of these measly little 5/16" jobs.
More pics when I get her set in. Then the body work begins! |

Looking good Brandon. Knowing that you are 'Chevymad', I am sure that the color there is chevy orange. It sure looks red to me though

| Well get this Mike.. seems Napa sells 2 different chevy colors.. Chevy Red Orange and Chevy Orange Red.. This is the first variety..Thought it would look better surrounded by Millenium Yellow.. |

Two more pics, didnt get started till late today so didnt get too much done. But tomorrow I'll put in the TCI Breakaway, bolt the th400 up and set her in the chassis. Realized today that the cheap air cleaner that came with my intake/carb setup is made up of 3 wrong pieces. Each one is a different size. .Good thing I didnt really want it anyway.
You can kinda see in that last photo. my poor engine stand is hatin it.. Supposed to be 1000 lbs..but its allready droopin! |

Looks sweet!
So... I'm just curious. Do you fix these trucks up to sell, or do you do it to piss your wife off? lol
You seem to be very productive on these things. |

This one will eventually be sold. That way I'll have more money for my 2nd gen poncho project.
Got alot done today, my engine stand thanks me for it too. Installed the stall convertor then bolted the th400 to the 454. Dropped the whole mess into the chassis. Both together is all my engine hoist wants to move. Just about picks the back wheels off the floor. After setting it in I discovered my tranny crossmember was in the wrong position. I'm using a 73 xmember in a 70 frame. Evidently theres a slight difference in holes, because there wasnt an existing set that matched up. Had to redrill the frame. I then converted the original points distributor to electronic using a Pertronix unit. The old distributor had a huge amount of end play which I had to shim out. Installed the distributor, Flamethrower coil, and all new ignition parts. Also installed a starter, flywheel cover, and then the headers. Installed a set of shocks as well.
My used parts bin is really coming in handy. Went diggin through and found the flywheel cover(later I found 2 more), fairly new starter, 4 monroe gas shocks(used from when I modified my blue truck). Thought I was going to have to buy a driveshaft too. These trucks all used 2 piece drivelines. My 2 parts trucks were 2 piece as well. This truck is a short bed, one parts truck is a longbed 3/4 ton, and the last was a longbed crewcab 3/4 ton. Well turns out I need a 55 1/2" driveline to use as a 1 piece unit. The rear driveline for the crewcab is 58"!! So I just need to take it in and have it shortened and balanced. Thats only about $50! I do need a th400 slip yoke though. Anybody have one?
Was curious how far the frame would drop when i set weight in it. Bottom of frame measured 15" up from the floor before. Thats with a 4" drop front and 6" drop rear. Dropped the 454 in and its 12 1/2" and dropping as it settles.
Anyway, heres a few more pics.

Here she sits.. waiting for a radiator and she'll be runnin..
Here's what the rad support looked like.. this part sits under the battery so it gets all eaten away.
Had a second rad support.. looked the same.. but I cut the other side off and flipped it around. Then welded it in.. Here it is patched up.
And here it is all ready to go now.
While the paint was drying, I went on to workin on one of the fenders.
Patch cut out and clamped into place ready for welding...
And here it is all welded in and mostly ground down..
Then the thunder started rollin and the rain poured in.. so here I am at the computer again |
