I need the top secret recipe for removing the valve guides from a 1929 Model A.
This would no doubt be easier if everything wasn't the same shade of 84 year old rust, and if I could actually see individual parts.
Can they be tapped out from the top down? Is there anything holding them in place other than 84 year old rust? is there a keeper rusted in there someplace?
Valves and springs are out, just need the guides evicted. _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |

if it's original and unmolested it should have a 2 piece valve guide in it, and they can be a nightmare to get out! do you have new guides for it?? and or new valves??? if you are doing new valves and you have new guides you can cut the tip of the valve off, weld a nut to the seal grove of the guide, and pull on it with a heavy slide hammer. if not there is an atattchment for a snap on 3 jaw to pull the guides with that too. i have done them both ways, both work. _________________ 1992 Camaro 1LE Z28 |

Cool, that's exactly what I was looking for. They do just slide out though correct? I was thinking about a piece of pipe or steel rod to tap in pushing them out from the top downward.
It will be stripped down to the block, resurfaced, checked for cracks and rebuilt. _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |

Your correct, I thought you were restoring a car. I saw someone post on here a few months back they had a really old car. Thought it was you.
So your using a old car engine in a kit airplane? Or am I even off on that? |

Only off in so far as its not a kit. It's plans built. They first flew in 31 I think, using model A for power. So there it is. _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |

they do push out. they are in there pretty good tho. some of them have to come out the top tho. some have a snap ring, and or flat washer built onto them! snap on makes valve guide drivers for an air hammer if you end up cutting the tip of the valve off. after the guides are replaced you are going to have to have the seats cut. if it were me, i would let whatever machine shop you're going to use to rebuild it, handle the guides, and seat cut. _________________ 1992 Camaro 1LE Z28 |

Finding disappointment in the fact that none of his projects have yet resulted in a horrible crash-and-explosion-related death, flea has now decided to up the ante. |

So you buy the plans/wood, and cut to fit yourself then? |

Yep that's about it. Pretty simple structure, the main bits are 1x1 hemlock (spruce would be better) sheeted with 1/8 mahogany. Wings are, or will be, 1/4x1/2" spruce ribs and 1"x 5" spruce spars milled to the correct final dimensions and taper. _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |

Well recklessness hasn't killed me yet. Imagine what I can do with a little caution. _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |

I was not previously aware of the hemlock. That choice does not say "caution" to me.
Hem splits and blows out and smells like poo when you cut it. |

Hemlock can split if you're not careful. But as far as aircraft use it is acceptable. It is a little heavier than Sitka Spruce, but also a little stronger. The real key here, and Aaron you will appreciate this, is that it is MUCH cheaper. A little selective shopping around at the local lumber yard, and it can be had for about a buck a foot. 1x1 and this place - THE place, it is 2.35 plus 35% for lengths over ten feet.
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/wppages/capstrip.php
I needed 4 pieces at 16 feet and a handful of shorter pieces plus the shipping.
Say what you will about my laid back and somewhat goofy sense of humor etc. but there is a learning curve here, and I am not doing anything on this project without spending all the time I need to do the learning. _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |
