Selling my mazda b2300 as it always giving me problems and just a little too small. I've been looking into a 4 wheel drive rig that I can get "decent" gas mileage out of. I haven't heard anything bad about a Toyota with the 22r in it. I have about 2 grand to spend and I want something reliable because this will be my daily. I found this on CL, wondering what you guys think and if you've had any experience with these trucks. http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/cto/3646309877.html

You would be lucky to get 18mpg out of a 22R/RE in a 4x4. Laughing

Toyota trucks always get crap mileage. The R-series motors are old tractor motors and they're built for torque and low maintenance not economy.

Honestly you're not going to find a 4x4 truck getting over 20mpg, much less one for under two grand. That Yota is priced to sell, they go for 3K+ all day.

So should I jump on this one while I have the chance? Don't know how many miles it has on it waitin for the guy to reply to me
And I'd be willing to sacrifice economy for something that I can rely on to get me from Tacoma to auburn everyday for school.

Just my two cents:

If the truck is solid I would buy it, drive it and then flip it for cash during hunting season.

That said I would give it a thorough going-over to make sure he's not trying to offload a time bomb in the hopes that someone's greed will blind them.

He says in the ad it has 41k showing on the odo, which means probably it has 341k. Laughing

It'll be terrible on the highway. It's a 4-speed with no overdrive. You'll be lucky to get 13-14mpg with a Weber and 4-speed. It also has no power steering.

Pretty much the biggest chronic problem with Toyota's R motor is the timing guides breaking and the timing chain wearing through the block, rendering it trash. This happens roughly ever 150k miles unless the chain is replaced. Luckily, it will usually make a hell of a racket before it happens, so you have plenty of warning if you're not an idiot. I've personally fixed two engines with this problem, a 20R and a 22R-E.

Those trucks are the most overpriced, cheap feeling, terrible interior, no refinement vehicles ever. I have no idea why they are worth so much. Laughing That being said, if that 2k one is in good shape it seems to be a little below market value. Keep a sharp eye out for rust and other problems. He does say it has rust. Make sure if you test drive it that you get it up to highway speed. Listen for terrible rattling noises from the engine.

It will probably be barely as reliable as your b2300 and not any bigger or more refined or better mileage, so I am not sure why you want it aside from the 4wd and "Yota Fever" Very Happy

Haha... he just now edited the hell out of that ad. When I first saw tonight it it was like four pictures and a price. Laughing

Four speed can be usable in a properly geared truck. My buddy had an old one that was a freeway champ, but you had to be careful off a light with a load. Wink That said who knows what ratio is in it now.

No PS in a 4x4 is a horrible idea.

You will know as soon as you start it up cold if the timing chain is worn.

Also get some decent seats for it if you buy it. Lots of truck benches make your nuts fall asleep but Yota is by far the worst for that.

good motor, crappy in the power department. But still better then the V-6 models thru the years. Both 22r and the 3.0 had the same hp rating for a long time.

I have a family member that has over 350k on his 22r and I have never had to change the guides (knock on wood) he bought a new 4 runner thinking it would be like the old one he has with the miles and he is finding out this is not the case!

all in all good trucks, the only reason they sell around this area for so much is because every high school kid and their brother has one. At least in my town that is.
