| So I have a dilemma. I am trading a guy some labor, prob 30k worth of remodel labor, for his car restoring labor. This is one of his ads http://seattle.craigslist.org/skc/aos/3564814826.html . My dilemma is should i " waste " his skills on my camaro, or should I get a something that may be worth something when he is done? I am thinking a early 70s camaro |

| Which one would you rather have in the end? Personally I'd rather have a 3rd gen. |

His labor is his labor, shouldnt matter what its on.
Like others said, what do you want? Do you think your car is worthy of having 30k worth of work done?
Personally 69camaro vert>3rd gen fbody |

| I might have it split between two cars. I like my thirdgen, but I don't even know how 30k worth of labor could go into it. |

Or are you planning to do something, then sell it to get paid for your labor?
If you are going that route, get something that will have a mass appeal. |

This is my immediate thought. Even if his shop rate is $200 an hour he'd still be working on it all day every single day for a month straight. Plus if you're buying all materials you're looking at tens of thousands out of pocket there.
On the flip side, how does your "30K" in construction labor break down? Are you paying your apprentice out of pocket? Incidentals? Fuel? Material overrun? Late penalties?
I'm not trying to nose into your business or be an asshole but this entire thing smells from a mile out. I have seen guys get burned by much less than this and it only ever takes one bad bid for you to lose your ass and your business. |

I could show you really quick how 30k into a thirdgen is possible LOL
I say do whatever car you want and build it for YOU not anyone else. Unless your planning on resale then you will want to look for something that is a little more appealing to the masses/ holds the resale. _________________

| It is just labor. It would be little bits at a time. Over several monthes. I could see 30 k if u was also getting parts. But that much in labor is a lot. I will meet with guy and discuss more. I will see how it goes. |

| Basically all I wanted was a paint job. Figured I could do a bathroom remodel or something. But then he had a huge list. |

I hear ya, man.
Personally I'd tell him to give you a price on the bodywork and paint and then work back from there to calculate your free labor. |

| Ya. I will just do it a job at a time. He will take it down to metal and fix anything wrong. I will then bid each project as a labor only, going with the higher spectrum of prices. I guess ill start with a paint job. Then maybe have him rebuild motor. I will also have to work out with him how much he will charge me for materials if I have him build a exhaust. I think I will drive out to enumclaw , aka the ends of the earth, and talk to him in person. He wants his engine assembly room finished and a few other odds and ends done in his shop. But I also look at this as a learning opportunity if he will let me watch and learn from him. |

| I could easily think of 30K worth of stuff in labor for my Camaro. There's so many things I want/will have custom fabricated its not even funny. |
