I've been fighting an idle issue in the mazda - random changes to AFR, engine tries to die at stop lights.

I did the old carb clean around the intake trick and seemed to find the primary ports leaking vacuum. Replaced the gasket and surfaced the intake manifold and they still leaked. Straight end showed some inconsistencies on the block but the gasket was much thicker than the offset. So I tried it with a new gasket and some anaerobic sealant and still when I spray some carb clean and the gasket gets wet, it exhibits a leak.

I found some threads about people saying when this gasket gets wet it leaks vacuum. WTF? Anyone hear anything like this? I'll have to bring my propane torch home and try it without dampening the gasket I guess.

Damn I need to find $$ for the megasquirt! lol

Seems to me if paper gets wet it should be less likely to allow a vacuum through it.

How about using some gasket paper? Is the pattern too complex to reliably cut out?

As Aaron said, that seems bass ackwards. Usually adding a liquid to a gasket causes it to swell and then seal not the other way.

Seems to be sealed now. Carb still leans out when coming to a stop. Damnit, need money for MS!
