so my friend sold me a 9bolt and said it had 3.73 gears, and it ends up its a 3.23....so i wasnt very happy about that. so i have a 3.08 posi drum rear end now, is it worth the trouble to swap to the disc 3.23 9bolt even though i wanted 3.73's and will a 3.23 even make a difference??

Rear end i have now is a 10 bolt 3.08 drum posi. The one i just bought is a 3.23 9 bolt disc posi with staggered iron calipers . Is it worth the swap or should i wait for 3.73s

If it's a 9-bolt then it's a 3.27. Still a decent upgrade I think. 3.27 is a great driver gear. 3.73 is a little high, especially with a 700R4 IMHO.

But if you don't want to swap, I'd be interested in taking it off your hands

3.73 is perfect for stock trans ratios in these cars.

3.23/3.27 is no slouch. 3.08 is terrible.

I'd definitely swap it. It's stronger, better, and has disc brakes.

Only takes an hour!

You shouldn't have to change brake lines. The lines native to the brakes/rear have a single T connection. Soft line from Chassis to Tee should be the same for you.

E-Brake cables again are brake specific.

WTF? Who sells a whole rear with brakes, but no brake lines?

You have to fabricate the brake hard lines then. Yours wont work, but you should be able to use the soft line tee.

3.73 + 3.08 first gear in the 700R4 is dumb. I ran it for awhile. Wink 3.27 is fine for that transmission.

LMAO Harbor kids.

I would hit the yards before I tried to build the lines. They have a tee fitting and one side has a softline and connector.

For a parts reference for brakes and whatnot just tell them you have an '86 IROC or Trans Am with rear disks. However, you will not find parts for the axle itself on the shelf anywhere. That stuff comes from junkyards or Australia.

You will need a prop valve, either aftermarket or the factory shuttle-thingy.

I'm with stupid

I've had all three in my 89. 3.08 was a great highway gear, but nothing more. 3.23 was a significant improvement and the current 3.73 is by far the best of the three. Gas mileage goes down with each numerically higher gear ratio...

If you can't find your flex lines from the calipers to the hard lines, they can be fabricated. I had a full set of three lines for my axle made at Belfair Hose, made them u while I waited - they're out by the Bremerton Airport.

IIRC on my stock 10 bolt one of the caliper lines was hard lined.

They may have done it that way on the ten as well. Last ten I had with disks went to the scrap yard where it belongs. Razz

All I know is one side of my 9-bolt disk lines is soft with a junction block and a banjo fitting and the other is hardline right to the caliper.

The tee'd line coming from the chassis also changed threads over the years, so watch out for that.
