recently my LT1 starter has been acting up ill go to start it and it just clicks (gears dont mesh it just hits flexplate) once in a rare moon it will start after a few clicks, most of the time jumping works and if that doesnt work i have to reach down with a wrench and cross the starter posts. so my question is, is there a difference in tooth count on a 91 350 tpi vs the 93-97 LT1 cars? it was working fine for a long time until just recently it does it every 3 days or so, battery and alternator are good had em tested

If jumping it works then it's not the tooth count. Even so, they're the same. You're losing power somewhere or the starter is toast.

If it just clicks, that's a power supply or starter issue.

If it SPINS it could be an engagement issue.

Almost sounds like theres a dead spot in the starter, seems wierd since its fairly new. next time this happens find something to tap on the case of the starter a few times. if that makes it start then you have an internal starter problem.

Why don't you just quit ruining starters? Laughing
This is like your 3rd or 4th if I reckon right.

My two cents? Not enough voltage to the solenoid due to resistance in the trigger wire. That will cause this issue and also cause undue cooking of starters. It's the same problem that plagued John's infamous Taurus wagon.

I would guess at some point someone bypassed the VATS module or the clutch switch with a poor gauge of wire, or some connector is corroded. This is a later car so the trigger wire is significantly longer and more prone to this issue.

i do have vats bypassed with a resistor soldered in between the vats wires

and yeah this is like the 3rd starter, the first few were because of my remote start brain failure but i took all that out now so its not that this time

so i went to oreillys and did my signature parking lot starter swap. and i found out that 96-97 LT1's had 11 tooth starters and 93-95 had 9 tooth starters and a stock 350 one is a 9 tooth, so i took my 11 tooth out and got a 9 hopefully that works cause when the starter was clicking before it was just smacking the flexplate
