Just curious, dudes.
What brand?
What weight?
What change interval?
How long have you been running it? |

I usually don't use synthetic except when the engine is boosted. You wondering about your turbo 3.8L? |

I'm running valvoline synth in the v/8s. 5k change on them.
The toyota 4banger gets mobil 1 at 9500mile change.. It's still light golden brown and can barely be seen on the stick.. and still at the full mark.
I quit using the mobil 1 synth in the v/8s when I lost the comp cam in the truck while using it. It did however hold much better hot oil pressure. |

Do you have any sign of a rear main leak in the jeep Paul? The dealership changed my rear main before I bought it, but it still leaves a quarter sized spot sometimes. Worried switching to synth might make it worse. On the other hand 2500miles and the dipstick still says full, so its not leaking much. |

Castrol 5w40 or Valvoline 5w30. The synVR1 race stuff has been on sale a lot lately so I've been using the 10w30 version. Kendal race20w50 for the bmw. _________________

Rotella T6 in everything for me. Napa Gold filters too.
I change the oil at 4-5k in the Subaru now. I do know that the little oil leaks I had and cold start lifter tick all disappeared when I switched from Castrol synthetic. Also the oil pressure light goes off faster when the car starts on cold days. I like the T6 a lot.
I also ran T6 in my motorcycle and it made it a lot quieter and made the clutch action much smoother.
Next oil change in the Camaro is getting T6 too, right now it has Castrol still. I haven't switched it over yet. But I am expecting great things here too. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Unless they've changed formula's in the last few years Castrol is not a true synthetic. They won a court battle for the right to sell it as synthetic only because the oil industry has never defined the term "synthetic".
It is what is called hydrocracked. Basically ultra refined dino oil. They bust down the long carbon chain molecules into smaller ones. Doesnt mean its bad, just that its not a human designed molecule like "true" synths. |

VR-1 race oil 10W-30
changed after every day at the track (when I was running the car)
pretty sure I will run this oil again the bearings all looked great on teardown and I didn't have to worry about cam problems since it had high levels of zinc and other additives in it.
Just gets kinda expensive!
I also ran Mobile 1 for years until they changed the oil over to this new stuff that had fewer of the good additives. Right before they changed it over I went and ordered a bunch of it in and ran it for like a year. _________________

Right after they changed it over is when my cam went flat. Cam had about 50k on it but was running fine one moment.. gone the next. |

What Weight is this T6? is it a Diesel oil?
I've been running high mileage 10W40 Valvoline or Castrol in the 'bird (with a newish roller cam) 3K interval. OE oil filter. It seeps a little, burns a bit. |

Sort of. They sell it as a "fleet" oil with the idea that it's rated for gassers and diesels and the viscosity range (5w40) is wide enough that you can run it in most anything. I have been curious about it for awhile and I am glad to see a positive recommendation.
I asked this question because I am thinking of changing oil brands for all three vehicles.
I run Delo400 15-40W in the diesel and with the turbo on it (and the pressure sender now sitting on top of said turbo) the oil pressure drops way down at hot idle. I have had that same issue with Delo in a variety of engines before and I think that's just how Chevron does it.
I threw some 10W30 Castrol dyno in the Camaro just to get it running but I will need something better once the turbo goes on
And finally the Bimmer. With the 4.10 rear axle and that rev-happy M42 I've seen the redline a few times already. When it was new BMW recommended anything from 15W40 to 20W50. A lot of BMW guys run the T6 or the Schaeffers. The guy I bought mine from didn't mention the brand or type but he said he had been running 5W30. |

Yes, even though the bottle says "Synthetic" on the Castrol I have bought in the past, it is really just extra-processed dino oil. It's a Group III base.
The Rotella T6 is the only synthetic Group IV Rotella oil. It only comes in 5W40 and is really a great oil in my opinion. It honestly made a noticeable difference in cold start noise and oil pressure in everything I've put it in so far. Subaru boxer engines are notoriously picky about oil type with regards to lifter noise and piston rattle. Even as the oil ages I can hear different noises on startup. Rotella has been very good in my Subaru.
It is usually sold with the other Diesel oils and it does carry the API CJ-4 designations for diesel approval as well as the API SM approval for gasoline use. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

I ordered up a filter and a bunch of tune-up parts off of Pelican just now. I think I will try the T6 in the Bimmer first and see how it likes it.
Sucky thing is that I just changed the oil in the Ford, and that's a 3-gallon change.

I've noticed the delo hot oil pressure drop as well. I know its good oil, but the oil pressure gauge has kept me from using it. Just bothers me its so much lower then other brands. |
