ok so a friend of mine has a 92 rs TBI 305. everything is factory minus the aftermarket fan switch.
she drove it to work and when she came out it wouldnt start. had the car towed home, we tried replaced the starter and the ICM, still nothing, were kinda stumped. its wierd it was just an all of the sudden thing _________________

| Quote: | | Code 54: Low voltage at fuel pump OR Low voltage at Fuel pump relay OR Output failure at quad driver module |
Confused as to why you would replace a starter and then an ignition module?!?
The two fail in very different ways. |

my bad the code was 53, i new what the issue was but not the number of the code
53. High voltage at battery OR High voltage at exhaust gas recirculation valve OR Voltage reference error OR Problem at vehicle anti-theft system
well when my car didnt start i tried replaced those two things and it started again
we didnt actually replace it we swapped it out and see if it fixed it and it didnt so we put the old one back in _________________

...how do you know it has spark if it's not cranking?
(and are you getting 12v on the purple wire when the key is in the START position?) |

Check for voltage at the solenoid. I'm betting on a VATS failure as well. |

That's some good humor to start hump day!
Test light on the purple lead for the solenoid at the starter. If no power in the "crank" key position, work your way backward to the starter relay/vats/neutral switches/ignition switch.
If it has power and the heavy leads are tight, replace starter. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

put a paper clip in the spark wire that goes to the top of dizzy and use a screw driver to bridge the starter posts and look for spark.
the car wont even start if you put key to on and use a screw driver across the starter _________________

| So... fuel injectors not firing, starter not cranking. What does this remind you of? |

You see? You have learned nothing!
Test! Test the wiring at the starter as Ian, Paul and myself have all suggested. Then work your way back till you find power. If you find an issue at the module test the other end of it to make sure it's getting the right signal from the key, and so on.
If you want to throw parts at problems on your own cars that's fine because you are only wasting your own time and money. When you work on other people's cars they are not going to be very appreciative when they get a bill for a new starter, new ignition module, new VATS module, and then they find out that the issue was a ten cent resistor on their key that sh** the bed.
Not trying to be a dick, but there's more to this than buying parts and bolting them on. That's how the army fixes vehicles, but not the rest of the world. |
