If they weren't filled with fuel, the engine wouldn't run? .... _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

| I understand that. My assumtion is that with a electric fuel pump fuel only flows when pump on. I am wondering if with mechanical it is gravity fed and always flowing |

| Any system can siphon if you open it in a spot thats lower then the fuel level. You can also have gas pressure push it out on a warm day. |

In a black car in the sun it will.
Pop the line over some rags and put the new filter in right away. If you're going to leave the line open then take the gas cap off and stick something in the line.
All the people who responded gave good, correct answers. No reason to get upset. |

By the way, there is a technique to asking dumb questions that will get you off scot free most times without much humiliation. I usually begin with, "This is a dumb question but..." Amazing how well that one works.
Another option is to just tell the truth, "I'm too lazy to look this up and I'll bet one of you lonely internet hermits will rush to answer it for me..." That one is a bit hit and miss whether it gets a quick answer. And you have to be careful because there is a built-in trap that will make you look pathetic if you follow up your own post with, "Come on! Somebody has to know!" Common rookie mistake on the forums. |

| If one does not know the answer and is fairly new to working on cars how is it a dumb question. I have built many houses in my so with expierience I know many thinhs. Bit if a client asks why I do something or how to do something I do not take it as a dumb question but as someone who is interested and woukd likr to know why something is or how something works. Again many of us are new to mechanics but like third gen f bodies. We enjoy working on them and doing stuff to them. One would think a forum of third gen f bodies would be the place to seek answers, bit perhaps I was mistaken. I supose it is a place to be belittled and made to feel stupid. Thanks for setting it syraight. |

Yes, in the big person grown-up world there really are dumb questions.
When I took my dash apart and later had to post a picture of a part and ask where it goes... that was a dumb question. Difference between you and me is I can see the humor in that. |

I'm not going to say it was a dumb question, but the answer is quite simple. To elaborate on Brandon's answer, since the fuel line is lower than the tank, gravity will keep unused fuel in the line after the car is shut off. If you break the line at the filter, gravity does its work and starts a siphon effect and pulls on the fuel in the tank. _________________ 92 Camaro

| The tricky part is that the pressure in a sealed tank can cause a siphon from a line well above the level of the fuel. |
