well i pulled the camaro in the garage today. and was standing by the back of it to make sure that it cleared the door as it closed and nothing snags my bumber. and as soon as the door is closed all the way the spring snaps and dam near hit me in the head then bounces and hits the camaro in the top of the door by the window then hits the floor and bounced back up to get the lower fender and lower door. lucky it all looks like it will buff out but there are a bunch of white marks _________________

Coil springs? If so, get rid of them before you're injured or killed. A spring in my dad's garage let loose when I was working on my El Camino. One of the parts went through the wall that was behind me. Replaced with a torsion spring. |

I had one let go last summer too. Fortunately, it stayed on the rod that goes down through the length of the coils. _________________ 92 Camaro

Mine looked like this when it broke...
That rod is supported where the end of the spring is secured, but still free to rotate. The other end is attached to the pulley and cable that lifts the door.

That's a torsion, Al, it's a far better design because it is contained when it fails. A coil spring runs parallel to the tracks, straight back from the door.
All garage doors are dangerous. Coil spring doors particularly so. I had a swage pull on a cable once and it sent the coil back so hard that it wrapped around the j-hook on the other end. Never did get them apart!
I got a real bad concussion one time from that same garage door. The upper rollers fell out of the tracks dropping the entire upper section right on top of my head. All I remember is waking up on the ground. I still get headaches from that one. |
