|
|
I took the 89 to Aaron's shop today and we (mostly Aaron) replaced the fuel pump with a new Walbro unit that is more capable of feeding the 383. Due to a leaking filler neck seal at the cap, we replaced the tank while it was out with one from one of Aaron's previous projects.
Not many shots, but this is with all the interference removed, or repositioned and the tank removed.
And the "new" tank ready to receive the new pump which will go on the assembly in the bucket to the left.
The new pump primed and the car fired up first try. I have a new adjustable regulator to install in the near future, maybe free up some more horses with a little more fuel (a little at a time to see how it does).
We were also going to work on Aaron's brake lines, I have a pair of flaring kits (SAE & metric) along with a line bending tool in one of them, but fittings were hard to find today. When we did find them, it was too late to figure out the assortment needed, so Aaron still has the kits and plans to work on brakes tomorrow. _________________ 92 Camaro

I looked at my installed pressure gauge at idle today and found that the new pump indeed does overwhelm the stock regulator. I've been running 12psi with the stock setup, as soon as we put the new pump in, pressure went up to 15psi.
I installed the adjustable regulator today and set it up to 18psi, made some of the appropriate changes to the bin via EBL and Tuner Pro and have a smooth idle for now. Still need to drive and get some VE learning done and flash ECM. |

That is cool guys... fun to get together and get some mods done.
Al, was there an issue with the fuel delivery or are you just prepping for whatever the future brings?

Mostly prep work. The tank itself needed replacing though because of a munged up filler neck. My cap with the ratchet disabled (epoxy) would leak fuel on acceleration/right turns when full. |

Cool! Does your walbro whine? I never noticed it until it went away. _________________

Haven't noticed, but the rear gear has a slight whine to it above 40mph or so. |

My Walbro 255 whines like crazy in the Camaro, but in my Subaru it's nearly dead silent. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

I noticed a whine from the rear of the car on the test drive but I was unsure if it was the differential or the pump.
Regardless the issue will be solved automatically once Al gets the new exhaust on the car. |

hmmm, my 255 doesn't seem noisy but then again even with my 'quiet' exhaust it might be masking any noise there.

Haven't noticed Walbro 255s being any louder than a stock pump.
Turn key on to prime it, and listen? _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

You can hear the whine in this video, and it is loud enough to be heard over my dual 2.5" axle dumped exhaust in-car at idle.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMrQzLC2I5g&feature=player_detailpage#t=38s
I can't even hear the one in my Subaru prime with the engine off.
Why the difference? I have no clue. It hasn't seemed to impact reliability. The one in my Camaro didn't get noisy until about a month or two after it was installed and running.
My Richmond 3.73s whine on decel too, so my car is like an orchestra when driven correctly! _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Just the difference from one pump to another, or possibly the hanger its installed in. I've installed some new pumps that were noisey from day one, others are quiet like they should be. |

Vane pump quieter than gerotor pump just on the principal on which it operates.
You'll have to bother Jon if you want a more in depth analysis. |

I was kind of let down when I put the racetronix pump in place of the walbro. I just got used to hearing the prime whine! Made me feel like I was in a jet. Okay, maybe as biplane. |

I'm hoping as early as next month to at least have a new exhaust ready to install |

I think the jet analogy fits your car! _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

My analysis is that if you can hear the fuel pump then you don't have nearly enough horsepower. |

To hell with that. Only time I hear mine is when you first turn the key on. You cant hear it when its running, and I dont have enough hp yet. |
