A couple weeks ago one of my cats started rattling, wasn't a huge issue but now I think that it's intermittantly getting clogged. So that means I need some new cats, however if I'm going to mess with that I may as well get headers and a Y-pipe. I have the dual cats on my car and dot particularly want to convert to a single cat set-up for various reasons. One being that two 2.25. cats will outflow even a single 3". Another huge factor is that smaller diameter pipes/cats means more ground clearance, and I need all I can get. I also need to stay with shorties and stock exhaust routing to stay legal in the STX class so that rules out long tubes for now. Unfortunately aftermarket support for dual cats is very limited. So far I've only come up with:

Edelbrock TES #68762

Hedman Hedders # 68491

Dyno Don's

Hooker 2056 (out of production)

SLP Tri-Y's ( out of production)

The SLP's and Hookers haven't been available since around 2005 so I wont consider those. You can count out the Edebrocks due to their horrendous collector design. I'd love to have Dyno Dons but they're a tad spendy for even the mild steel versions, and there is very, very little info on the Headmens, not even any pictures. I'd prefer to make my own Y-pipe but I don't have my own welder or access to one otherwise it would be done already.

Are there any other options out there? I guess I never really looked into the shorty header options for our cars much and even the "best" ones have pretty iffy collector designs.

There's a place in Auburn where the guy can build you a set. Spendy so I've heard but top notch quality. I'm considering going there to have the Y-pipe that Kitsap Muffler hacked up for me replaced. Might even get the rest of the exhaust done, too.

Why not just get a high-flow cat and be done with it? Dual cats were done because of the crap flowing converters they had back then.

This ain't California, so you may as well do things right instead of "right". Wink

Just my two cents.

I will be using 2 high flow cats. I think ill go with the magnaflow spun cats or random tech cats. As I said, my car is pretty low as it is, and I want room to go lower. Right now the stock cats are the lowest part of the car and I don't want them to be any lower than the subframe. Two smaller cats will have a smaller diameter thus will tuck up further. besides that, I need to stay legal in STX, exhaust must stay in stock orientation and cannot eliminate cats. I've seen hooker 2055's and it's kind of ridiculous how low that Y-pipe sits, I can fit my entire hand between the Y-pipe and the floorboard.

I'm 99% sure that I'll be ordering a set from Dyno Don.

1.75" primaries
2.5" collectors
3/8" flanges
Non AIR
Ceramic coated
2.5" mandral bent down pipes

They're actually not as expensive as I had originally thought. I will still need to fab up the after cat Y-pipe and bend but I will picking up a welder soon enoug so hopefully I'll be able to do that myself.

I have Edelbrock on my car right now and keep having problems with leaks where the y-pipe meet the headers. Of course, the idiot who did my exahust did not put a pivoit point under the floorboard like a stock setup.

I was going to order some dyno-dons. But I'm really wanting to go lsx on this.

I'm running the edelbrocks too, no issues with the collectors but the design of the tubes was idiotic, when I did my AC delete I had to modify the crap out of a s10 box and I can barely fit a penny between the two lolthe front pipe goes over the top of the rest and then has a sharp bend to go straight down stupid pos.

I had Edelbrocks on my other Camaro. Installation was a breeze, plug access wasn't a problem, never had any leaks, and never had a problem with the bolts backing out. I was really dissatisfied with the collector merge and the Y-pipe merge.

I'll take flowtechs even over edelbrocks. They are terrible in comparision to every other header available.

I have hedmans on the lt1, and I'm petty happy with them. Pretty easy to install, decent sound, good price, flow well, no spark plug issues.

Never had a leak on my old pickup. And they were long tubes with glass packaged bolted on and no hanger.

I have to keep the stock cat locations for the class I run in. Otherwise I would have picked up some OBX long tubes.

Well I've made up my mind. I contacted Don last week about his headers and found that they aren't as expensive as everyone makes them out to be. Ceramic coated 1.75" primary, 2.5" collector headers and dual 2.5" down pipes came out to be $675. I think the equivalent coated hookers are over $800. Needless to say, I put in my order and he's building them as we speak Very Happy

Thought the coated Hookers for that price came with y-pipe.

They do, and the Dyno Dons that I'm getting come with a y-pipe as well. Apples to apples the Dyno dons end up being cheaper.

You can order Dons however you want really. Dual cat y, single cat y, no y at all, with or w/o smog pipes.
