I will give little back story first. I got car last sept. I have only drivin it home fand around block few times. When I got it the TV cable was attached to carb with a wire and had no bracket for it. It is a qjet carb. It also would shift hard and the ass end would slide, though the shift points seemed decent. I finally adapted a edlebrock bracket and got the end peice that attaches it to carb. Yesterday I had it too loose and it would shift way to early. I would be in third gear by thirty miles per hour. So I tighted it. It now only shifts if I let foot of gas. It does shift smooth though. No hard shift and no ass end slide. So my question, is, is it now too tight??

The length needs to be right and the armature throw of the carb needs to be right. Those guys are the only guys yet to do it right.

What Paul said. It's kinda complicated to set up exactly right. The brackets you can buy from edlebrock and holley are wrong. If the cable is set up wrong you'll burn the tranny up. The cable not only sets up shift points it controls the hydraulic pressure in the trans.

I bought a bowtie setup for a holley carb. It's awesome! It even has a cam setup that allows some adjustment of shift feel. It is $$$ though.

Ya I know. And I will go that route when I get someb more cash. I am assuming that the way the cable was set up that if the guy drove it for any lenth of time I doesn't have a lot of life left in it. I am more concerned of just driving it the rest of summer. Then hopefully in winter if tranny does go out I can upgrade.

I'm running the electronic CCC carb and distributor on the 327 in my formy. So it has the factory bracket setup and factory computer lockup.

Ya. That would be the easiest solution. Just find a factory bracket off a carbed car.

No.. my this is the original setup to my car. I've made a few tweeks to it, but its very forgiving of mods.

What Qjet are you using now?

A non cc out of an 85 truck. But my car was originally TPI. I still have all the wires and ECM, but as of now they are just sitting loose in my engine bay.

You dont want to retrofit a ccc.. While it works, its obsolete at best. It's just not trash like some think.

Reason I asked about which carb is that some qjet's DO NOT have the correct position for a tv cable hookup. I would think an 85 would however. Sounds to me like you just need to go to a jy and pull the bracket off an lg4 car to get things right.

My dad's truck is IIRC an '85 and has a T350. I am not aware of if a 700R4 was a possible option? I would assume that vehicles that did not have a 700R4 factory would not have the correct carb linkage to operate a TV cable.

On the other hand, my brother's T/A is using a non-CC Q-Jet from an '81 Suburban (SM465 truck) and it does have the correct bracket for a TV cable, so maybe it is possible.

I am not sure. I had and 84 truck and it had a 700r4, but the bracket that was on my car did not have a hole for tv cable. Just two small holes for throttle cable and what I assumed was crusise control. I now have it adjusted to where it will shift smooth unless I gun it , then it shifts hard and chirps tires. Now this is only from first to second, for I have not got it fast enough to get into third.

Sounds close. Again the problem lies in that the carburetor may not have the proper throw for that cable, reguardless of where you mount it.
