Trying to figure out how they stay in, do I need a fancy timing cover or do they stay in on hopes and dreams? _________________

I'm a little confused. Why are you trying to adapt a retro roller cam into a roller cam setup?
Yes, you need a special timing cover that's built heavier just for the button. You plain stamped steel pieces wont hold the thrust of the cam in a roller setup. That's why your original cam setup has a plate with two screws holding it in place.
Send the cam you have back, and get the right one for your motor. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

If you can return the cam easily, and get the correct replacement then Paul is right. Stock roller is a much better design.
The cam button option I brought up is if you're stuck with this one. I thought I read that it took you awhile to get this one.
Anyway, both ways are functional, but you'll need more pieces to make this one work.
Paul, is there shimming or some other setup work involved with the cam button? I think I remember the correct covers have a little 3 bar reinforcement that the button hits. |

This, a hundred times this. Why redneck rig that cam into your motor when it's as simple as getting them to send you the right frickin cam in the first place?
I would be mad if that happened to me, it seems like it's their fault and they need to fix it.
Apologies if I have the story wrong. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Engine in or out?
Best way
By removing the rear cam plug
Others,,,
Drill & tap the front cover for a 1/16" pipe plug in line with the gear somewhere so you can stick an indicator through it & measure directly
Pull the cam forward & carefully install the gasket & cover
Tighten it down & remove
Put an indicator on the cam gear & push it to the rear & see how much it moves
Or,,
Just move the cam back & forth & "feel" the clearance through the valley
It should just noticeably move & this is not an end of the world clearance, anywhere between 5 & 15 thou is acceptable, I also prefer the tighter side

LOL. Ok.. Send that cam back or sell it. Thats a pita. You'll just have to wait for the replacement.
I thought maybe you'd set one up allready Paul. Sorry for making you do the homework there. |

| Yeah I waited a over a month for this thing and it isn't advertised as a retrofit roller. I'll call summit tomarrow. If im stuck with the damn thing then I do have another cover with the re-enforced "Y" stamp in it to use. I thought if I could easily make it work, I don't want to wait for another cam to get here. |

He received the cam he ordered, but nowhere on the page does it say that it's a retrofit cam. We could have had this done by now, waiting another month or more while his daily driver is down is royally going to suck. _________________ Richmond 3.73 posi| 36/24 sway bars | SLP LM2 | Koni's | Ground Control 800/200 | Y2K wheels | Dyno Don headers & Y-pipe | airfoil | BBK underdrive pulleys | Raised strut mounts | Extended ball joints | LCARB'S

True, it does not say retrofit anywhere on that page, however it would have been a pretty big hint when it says it fits a 305 from '76 to '93, and Marine motors specifically. Makes sense to me.
Make CHEVROLET
Engine Type V8
Engine Size 5.0L/305
Liter 5.0
CID 305

Ending Year 1993

Then something else is going on. Never had a problem bolting a gear to a cam. The application specs out. Call Lunati yet?
Ahh got it. You bought a retro:
http://www.lunatipower.com/SearchResults.aspx?search=60110
Part Number Product Name
60110 Voodoo Retro Fit Hyd Roller Cam - Chevrolet Small Block 262/270
Probably why it took so long to get also. Call Lunati, ask for a CAM REC then call summit back if that's where you got it, and exchange. Or order from Lunati and return to Summit. Summit's real good about this kind of stuff. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

Summit takes awhile for stuff like this because they wont drop-ship, they want to unpack it and reship it to you.
For stuff they're out of stock on it's often much quicker to call the manufacturer and order directly, or find a place that will put in the drop-ship order for you without much markup. |

| Should I still call lunati and see if they offer one like the one I have that isn't a retrofit? I looked thru summit, and they don't offer one that is exactly the same. |

I'm no expert on cam choice, but I will say the Comp you found will work in your motor and it should be a decent cam too. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

The cam I pulled out of my car last year is pretty close to what your looking for. I still have it and would be willing to let it go for around 180.00. It has about 9K miles on it.
