The power antenna on my 87 stuck in the "up" mode back in the early 90's and has been in that position since. Over the years the mast has been damaged ( caught the stock throttle body that was on a shelve and whipped it onto the hood while backing the car into the garage etc.) and is in sad shape. When I stripped the car down to be repainted I had to take the spanner nut off to prep the body, the bezel promptly fell apart.
So I am in the market for a functional power antenna and bezel. Any suggustions where I could find replacement parts for these items? TGO was not much help. |

Hey Dave,
Mine went out on the GTA about 9 years ago or so. I wasn't sure what to do about it, I couldn't find anyone that had a 'stock' replacement.
I decided to take the factory antenna out which was very easy. You can go in behind the front passenger wheel by just removing a view of the fasteners which hold the inner fender molding on. From there it was only like 1 maybe 2 nuts to remove the unit from a bracket and then take off the nut on the fender. Once it was out, I went to a local car stereo store and found an aftermarket unit which was basically a similar size and shape. It also came with a variety of shapes and sizes for the grommet through the fender.
Brought it home, connected it, bam. Done. Been working ever since and I love having the antenna retract into fender when not in use, much cleaner and looks just like the factory unit.
Cost me about $45 bucks and not much time. I am still amazed that people don't just replace them this way.
Wish it had been more recent so I could give you a brand or something but I am betting if you just take that unit out of there you will be able to find something compatible.
Good luck.

I replaced one on my Olds (prior to 3rd gen) like Schultzy did with his GTA. Hirschmann was the brand IIRC, they make all sorts of aftermarket replacement radio antennae, among other things. Schultzy's right, the best way is to remove it and take it to an audio store - without removing it, you might only have to give them your car make/model/year for them to find a replacement for you. _________________ 92 Camaro

Thanks for the solid advise guys, thats what I will do. I cant believe some of the stuff I have just ignored with my car. The antenna, the missing molding around the windhseild, paint over spray in the front wheel wells etc. I spent so much time and money getting it 99% done after the repaint then just ignored the rest. It's been 6 years and is now time to really " finish " the exterior.
Then the sound system needs some attention. I still have the 120.00 Clarioin CD player in it that my sister gave me for my birthday in 1991. It sucks bad, even with the 600 watt JL Audio amp and speakers my wife gave me on my birthday 3 years ago. |
