How does one replace the original, which appears to be riveted together? Granted, it's a bit easier with the engine out of the way as it is now, but still looks to be quite the job to separate the thing. Here's a shot of it looking toward the steering box.

I'll take a look at mine when I get home. I don't remember how I did it but I did do it when I changed my steering box. _________________ 2010 Cobalt LT

Remove steering shaft from car, drill rivets out and replace disc that comes with new bolts.
Have you thought about a ragjoint eliminator? Or even the astrovan ujoint mod? Dewey and I both have the rag joint eliminator and I've noticed no ill effects. _________________

I think I'm going to go to the other end and pull the box off so I can either clean it up or replace it with a quick ratio box. The joint and shaft should come off pretty easy without the box on the car. I have given the eliminator some thought, the only issue I see is if the shaft isn't perfectly aligned with the box, there may be a binding point.
Hey Aaron, do you still have that quick ratio box available? I can pull mine off next weekend and make a trip to trade you. |

That's why I want to replace it. It's much more accessible with the motor out, it's a bit worn, and it's available at the parts store |

FWIW, I did this mod right after dew back in '07 and I think I've put ~60-70k on the car since then and I haven't had any issues. I do need to replace/rebuild the box and toss on a geared down PS pump but those are other issues. |
