Well I went to DMV today, and everything I was told on the phone was correct!
It was a cake walk, 15 minutes and $82.00 I was on my way with the classic / special interest registration!
No Inspection / No odometer reading / heck no car!

The local DMV lady was shocked that DMV headquarters would give me such information and advice Shocked
They really shouldn't do that she tells me...Well they did and here I am. She asked to see my drivers license, grabbed a form filled it out, had me sign, and that was it!

I had my plates, proof of insurance, title...truly ready...no need Very Happy
She and the lady next to her were pretty cool and 3rd gen fans, as I got chatting with her she volunteered they don't verify or check mileage!
We don't care she says, just more paperwork for us...good to know I say!
And unless you are driving in a fashion that none of us would consider, (reckless, speeding, dui etc...)you should not have any issues!

I get to keep my original plates, and I only have to have one on...the back! I will see my tag in a couple of weeks with the new registration!
Now if your ride is a daily driver, I don't know how well this would pan out for you. The only risk would be a traffic officer seeing you all over all the time with that tag Question

Even then it would be hard to prove and probably not worth his time. Cool

Yea that is what the DMV ladies were telling me, it's hardly worth the officers time messing with it, so what would be the point...I was thinking way good!

Good job man. I cant wait to register my 87 as a classic. Then I can register it to my home address ( been registered to my brothers old address in Oak Harbor for 16 years) and not worry about emmissions testing.

Bringing this back from the dead to ask a question.. My '88 'Bird probably wont be getting more than 5k miles a year anymore anyways so I been thinking about registering it special intrest to avoid lots of BS since my tags expire this month. Do you have to have classic car insurance to register this way or does regular insurance sufice?

Washington has collector plates too. 30 years old and you can get them, no more buying tabs and no more front plate! I only have two years to go before I get mine... Laughing

I have had standard insurance on a car with collector plates and no one ever made a stink about it.

Derek, all I had was basic liability and I was able to get a special interest plate for my 86 camaro before I wrecked it. The problem is you have a list of things on why it should be considered a "special interest" vehicle, even if its older than 25 years. I listed "used for club functions" or something like that (whatever the option was on the application).

I doubt you should have any trouble, but be advised, if you drive it all the time and get stopped by a cop, you stand at risk to lose the classification as a "special interest" vehicle.

Yeah I won't be driving it all time. It will just stay in the garage and go out to be worked on and driven on nice days.

FiveO is correct 25 years old my TA is an 83.
DMV (local) sucks and wont help you at all, I got this info from a Salem DMV if you need any help let me know,
there is some paper work to fill out, I believe it was $25.00 on the registration transfer and $1.00 for the tag!
I'd def look at the option the $$ savings is great, but mainly NO MORE of that DEQ crap! Cool
And you can keep your plates! I wouldn't give my original issue plates up, those are part of the whole theme.
They'll try to get you to buy some yack plates for a bust your balls price...NOT!
Feel free to give a shout if I can be any help on this!
Cheers Guys! Cheers
