I know a few of you guys on here brew your own beer. So heres my issue. I've become lactose intolerant, yea it sucks from the dairy state and cant have dairy But thats not the only problem, most all alcohol has some form of lactose in it and just churns my stomach way to must to even drink one beer. So you guys that make your own, does it contain any form of lactose ? or could anyone point me in the direction of something i can drink thats got some kick to it. |

Weird. I became lactose intolerant last year and I've never had any issue with beer. Other than it's awesome and it makes me do hilarious things. It got me free dinner and dessert tonight.
My home brew never got me sick, but I've only brewed a few batches... _________________

The only beers that contain lactose, usually bill themselfs as such. Something like Drop Top, contains a small bit of lactose, but it is added.
It could be that your system has problems with any of the more complex sugars. When the starches from the barley are converted to sugars, there are several forms of sugars that are created. The simple sugars get metabolized by the yeast and converted to alcohol.
Yeast converts the monosaccharides, but not the other forms of sugar. Lactose is a disaccharide, but so is maltose, which is the common form of sugar that is left in beer after fermentation, and gives it the "sweetness" that you taste in most beers.
My only advise would be, try some forms of beer that are very dry (say maybe guiness), and will hopefully contain less maltose, and see if that helps. If you body is unable to process maltose, then you will be in trouble drinking most beers. _________________

So your cancer doc diagnosed you based on something you mentioned? I'm with Paul, this doesn't add up. There's a lot of things you can have that will look like lactose intolerance. For instance you can be allergic to milk specifically, but not lactose. As Dewey mentioned, you can also be allergic to various types of sugar.
I'd find a local allergy clinic and get a test. No idea on the price (had one as a kid) but they can easily tell what you are allergic to. |
