Ive been driving this car to trouble shoot stuff. Cant do a project like this w/o a few mistakes and unknowns. All in reference to 98 dodge intrepid with a 99 300m motor.


The engine accellerates very smooth, and at idle the rpm stays very steady. No place to hook up a vac gauge. Have drove it about 90 miles and no ses light. But it has some vibration in park, and much worse in gear sitting at a stoplight.

Ive done some google searching, and searching on the trep boards. Appears this could be a sign of motor mounts. But I'm actually wondering about trans mount as the trans was just hanging for almost 2 years with no support

Anyone dealt with anything like this and this was the answer?

this is purely speculation, but i'll tell you what i am basing it on.

if you leave a manual transmission (i know you have an auto) hanging on it's input shaft with no bolts long enough you can warp a clutch, or bend an input shaft.

would it not stand to reason that the same could be true of the automatics? you could have a warped torque converter, or something else that has flexed.

i would get out my stethoscope (long screwdriver) and start putting it on things while an assistant has the brakes on while the car is in gear. check everything out and find the source of the vibration. hopefully it's just a mount and not something more substantial.

There was no motor, flywheel, or TC on it for the 2 years.

It was hanging from the mount that is at the rear of it. (this is fwd, but front to rear motor/trans mounting)

If it has the normal steel/rubber mounts, just throw a jack under there and see if it will move up independent of the cradle. If it does, the mounts are crapped up.

Sounds like engine/trans mounts.

Tony, you wont hurt the clutch letting the trans hang. You'll hurt the input etc.

They are the steel/rubber combo.

Looks like the trans one is quite dry-rotted. Motors dont look to bad??
