Ok, my internet company sent me a deal about upgrading my connection speed, thing i'm wondering is is it really that much faster?
The current ratings are: 768K/256K
and the new ratings if i decide to upgrade are: 3 Mbps/500 Kbps
All that mumbo jumbo confuses me. figured i know a few on here are computer guru's so i'd ask. |

| Yes, that equals ALOT faster. But, it depends on what you are doing and when. Verizon FIOS promised 17MB up and 3.5MB down with there mid range package ( included FIOS HDTV and 3 HDTY boxes) and I felt like I got valua out of the deal. Lately ( Verizon was bought out by Frontier) it seems alot slower. Having a great connection at your home is defeated by crappy local servers that handle the info, just something to keep in mind. |

My grandpa is an installer for Verizon (as stated, frontier now)
We'll see what difference it makes, it will take 5-7 business day's to get to my place they said.
I live in a smaller town outside of the tri city's, so it drastically affected my connection compared to when others who live over there.
I just get on and do the usual surfing, don't download much anything. i'd like to be able to get on xbox live, but right now the only good time to do it is usually between midnight-3am. joy's of clearwire.
maybe this will change it..i'll cross my finger's, wont hold my breath tho. |

Full-time network administrator here.
If the upgraded speed is also through Clearwire, don't expect Xbox Live to run much better. The times you will see an improvement is when you are loading a page that has a large amount of graphics or streaming video. That will be up to 3-4 times faster (more bandwidth) than it is now for you, but keep the same latency. A gaming service, like XBL however, is much more dependent on latency than on bandwidth. In simple terms, latency is the measure of how long data takes to get started from the internet to your house, while bandwidth is the amount of data you can push through at one time. A cell network service like Clearwire is going to have poor latency times (pause between clicking a link and starting to load the page) but theoretically good download speed (time required to finish loading an image or video).
I guess my advice in as few words as possible, take the cost of the upgrade into account and realize that your Xbox experience will most likely not improve a whole lot. The delay in loading a web page will also not be much if any better, but the graphics and video on the page will load much faster. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

I do phone and cable tv all day.
However, I have no experience with verizon, clearwater, or likely anything in your area.
From what you say you do, I doubt you will notice much difference.
I have comcast(craptastic) that is to be 7mb. Since they monitor all the traffic, Ive gotten tagged as a high bandwith user and they blocked me back to 1mb _________________ 2008 GMC Z71
