I'm going to try my hand at recovering the stock seats that came in the 89. Can't be all that difficult. I ordered a new reproduction kit from Hawks which comes with the hog rings and pliers. I got the stock black and silver velour coming, door panels will be next probably about Christmas time. Should be like a whole new set of seats for $350.
Pics when it comes and I start working on it. _________________ 92 Camaro

Good deal Al. Brandon did his own with the Trans Am seat covers and it turned out great. I have been thinking about re-covering the stockers and putting those back in myself.

It's nice that the set is for all four seats, with the option for split or solid back rear seats. |

You'll need to buy more hog rings. Took alot more then they supplied to install like factory. Kit takes awhile to install. Once its all together you'll need to smooth the wrinkles with a heat gun.. bit nerve wracking. |

Thanks Brandon. There's an upholstery shop down the street (the one that did my 92). Maybe I can get some hog rings from him. As for the wrinkles, I'm putting on fabric, not leather or vinyl, don't know how a heat gun would work. I'm going to need a tool to remove the headrests, something long & thin to release the catch inside. |

I dismantled the passenger seat this morning just to see how they were put together. Looks like the way the bolsters are separated, I can add a bit more foam (and the driver seat needs it) and have a pretty solid seat Brandon, you're right, there are alot of hog rings in there
In case anyone is interested. I'll have a set of seats with tracks available after I'm done. The driver side is a bit worn on the bolster. |

Got started today. I went to Jo-Ann's and bought 2 1/2 yards of 1/2" high density foam and some spray adhesive, with coupons, about $25.
This was how the driver seat looked when I first picked up the car, until yesterday, springs poking through the fabric in the bolster.
After carefully disassembling the seats and removing all of the hog rings, I was able to get the covers off wit little effort, and ended up with this..
The seat cushion, the slots are for metal rods that separate the two seat panels, and the bolsters from the seat.
The back rest, the black strip is velcro that separates the lumbar from the rest of the back, and the vertical slots for metal rods to separate the bolsters from the back. Also visible is where the springs are exposed.
After bending the ends of the springs over and gluing the tears closed, I glued some of the foam to the bolsters and some to the seat cushions, this is almost all of that 2 1/2 yards
Now I just wait for Hawk's to get the covers here. Maybe by next weekend....

Seat covers came today. I started in as soon as I got home from work and finished covering the driver seat, still need to assemble and attach the hardware and do the headrest.
Here is the kit right out of the box, Brandon is right, just by looking at it, I'll need to get some more hog rings.
The re-covered driver seat, the only thing different that I could see is that there is no "CAMARO" embroidered in the lumbar panel.

I found out that this isn't something I'd like to do for a living Doing the front seats was pretty hard work, but the results are worth it. Most of the wrinkles are now out and the fronts are almost ready to go in the car. On to the rear seats tomorrow. |

Hey thanks. If you make your way over here, I might need some more hog rings and a good set of ring pliers (the one in the kit is almost too small). |

It's not super difficult work, but its not too fun to do either. You're hands all cramped up yet?
At least the results are worth it. |

You're right, it's not super difficult. Yes my hands are cramped up, and I still have the rear seats to do
I put the fronts in the car this morning and removed the rears so I can redo them. I also left off the headrests for a while, I sent Rich a PM to see if we can do something with the covers on them.
Here's what I have so far...
Door panels to come after the new year

Nice! I like those better than the ripped Schmucks-brand seats you had before, Al.
You need an IROC steering wheel though. |

Even the IROC one is ugly. Get a nice Grant wheel and be happy forever! _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

Grant wheels are to small IMO. Although I've seen some of their newer stuff in the catalogs and it looks bigger. I am a little biased towards a big wheel though...
