Guys, that truly blows. I quit one job earlier this year, and then got laid off from my second job as a mechanic. Luckily I landed on my feet with a construction outfit. A lot of guys aren't anywhere near as lucky. And the layoffs keep coming. Arrow Trucking folded on the 24th:

Kind of a long topic, but apparently they were repoing trucks leaving drivers and freight at truck stops with no way to get home. |

I've lost my job twice in a years time and have only worked 6 months of the last year. Something new will come along, don't worry. At least you'll have unemployment to ride on! Just got to hang in there and keep you're eyes peeled. _________________ E30

Sorry to hear that guys. I got laid off the best job I ever had back in march. But now with the dream liner and it's first flight behind her, there may be an upswing in hiring again. So I have hope of getting my old job back someday. _________________ Member of the "Elite T56 Club" , big brake club, and "burgundy" (not red or maroon) car owner.

I used to drive for Arrow bout 3 yrs ago, I saw the tell tale signs back then so when they folded I wasn't too surprised but still kinda was you know what I mean.
Any way sorry you guys got laid off, I'm right behind you, I got hurt at work in october got laid off for acouple weeks, made my boss/long time friend feel like crap so he brought me back. Now I find out I have torn ligament in my shoulder. Doctor app on January 14 and I know he's gonna say quit using it till it heals and probably gonna say surgery. only silver lining is I'll get a state check, still I am not looking forward to it. Maybe arrow will hire me back as HR. _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |

That sucks guys! I got laid off from a job that I'd had for 6 years in 2000. I thought I was totally f'ed. Luckily I had a friend who is a manager with Coca-Cola in Bellevue. He got me a job and I've been there ever since. Something will come along. _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

| I am sorry you guys were let go, and the timing does suck also. Dont feel like you were singled out though, it's just the nature of todays economy. I had to let 4 people go two weeks ago. They were good workers, been with the company for several years. I hung on to them as long as I could, just didnt have any work for them. |

You might be tired of hearing this, but I encourage anybody without a college degree to take this kind of life event to reinvent their life. Below is a link to the United States Department of Labor showing 2008 unemployment rates and average wages vs. education level. There are HUGE differences in wages and job security between high school diploma and college degrees. And the gap has only grown larger in 2009. Just like the website says, "Education Pays."
http://www.bls.gov/emp/ep_chart_001.htm
Don't worry about whether or not you have enough money for college. Your earning power after school will make up for school loans and beyond. Get education loans, put your nose to the grindstone, and get done quickly. Your earning power after school will make it much easier to pay off the loans rather then trying to save money before going to school. If you didn't have much success in high school don't let that stop you either. You are an adult now and you have much more personal drive and experience. I guarantee you will be a much better student now then in the past.
Oh, and don't forget there are a lot of hot girls in college..... very hot girls..... lots of them. |

I have to agree with QwkTrip. When I was younger, 20 ( turned 40 today) I took the quick cash and joined the Carpenters Union. The economy has been booming for 15 years and I made as much as I wanted ( 50k - 120K anually) depending on OT. But... I chose an industry that is volital. My work experience cannot crossover to other industries. If I was to be laid off, I am screwed. I am near the top pay level for my skill set. I can perform side jobs and collect unenjoyment but I lose all medical bennies after 3 months. As of now, I can retire at 55 with full benifits though.
In the long run you will make more money with a college education. Not to mention your body will be better off and you will be able to retire with your health intact, genetics willing. I have had two knee and one back operation before I was 35. I am know 40 and am really feeling the 20 years of physicly demanding work. |

I am happy. They were a great company, I just had an oppertunity to work for a local guy with only 6 trucks. Very laid back, other company was always late.
Gonna miss those late night wide open runs across Nevada, or waking up at sunrise in New Mexico and realising it looks nothing at all like I imagined the night before.
I'll go back over the road after I can buy my own truck and run it the way I want to. Until then I shall hual hay to the coast and be home almost everynight. Make 3 trips a week. 600 miles across some pretty insane roads makes for a long day. |

I haul oysters from south bend wa to eureka CA that is a long day. 12 hours one way. Boss thinks I'm lazy or something cause I start on US 101 head 50 miles east to I5 then to grants pass OR back to 101 and to Eureka. takes 12 hours 550 miles. He wants me to run straight down 101 all the way, 470 miles 12 hours. I think he's insane 12 hours of constant shifting on 101 I'd sink a bullet in my head after about 4 hours. I just hit I 5 at exit 77 in WA and set the cruise till I get to the 55 in OR. Only work three days a week take four off. Tis nice. _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |
