well i was drivin around the KP just having some fun on the back roads and all the sudden the motor starts making a knock/ticking sound, i was like oh crap. at idle its not so bad, when i give it gas it gets worse and when i give it gas the tick gets faster......idk what it could be, i know that i was told that the valve covers leak and needed new gaskets, could that be the culprit?

That could be bad if the valve covers leaked enough to where you lost alot of oil.. Did you check it?

oil and oil pressure is fine, someone said to me that it might be air getting sucked in thru the leak in the valve cover... idk if thats true or not

Sounds like an exhaust leak.

Agreed, my 3.1 has one too.

Had a loose manifold to y-pipe connection on the driver side a while back and it quieted down some when tighted up. Now I think one or more of the manifold bolts has backed out a bit, just need to get in there and find it.

Good call, didn't think of that.
Is it a really constant- "tick tick tick"..... or does it not seem to have a pattern?

from what i can tell, its a constant tick tick tick no specific pattern, since the oil was low i added a quart, and i used a heavier oil to help with the heat a little, and the tick quieted way down but i can still hear it a little bit...

Al, how hard is it to tighten the manifold to y pipe flange, thats where mine is leaking

I took mine to an exhaust shop and they tightened it up for free. It's just a flange type fitting with a pair of studs on the manifold side and a nut to tighten each one down on the Y-pipe side. Should be able to reach it with a deep well socket (I forget what size).

Exhaust leaks often sound like lifters.

Why not try ADJUSTING the rocker arms first?

I've always thought that the injectors firing sounded like a bunch of noisy lifters, at least with the hood up. One or two lifters would sound different though.

1) Remove valve covers.

2) Rotate motor over to where E and I valves are closed on #1. (E valve will be coming closed)

3) see if you can freely spin any of the pushrods for #1 between your fingers. Have a buddy slowly rotate the motor and repeat the process IN THE FIRING ORDER for each cylinder.

If you can't rotate any of the pushrods freely, you should be at proper lash for a hydraulic cam

If you can rotate any of em freely, while spinning the pushrod between your finger, tighten the ball nut on the rocker arm until you can't freely spin it, then go about another 1/4 to 1/2 turn. This should put you at proper lash.

well now that i remember that day the cat hit the ground on a steep hill, then i found these...(no wonder walts wanted $300 to fix my exhaust manifolds)

(broken bolt heads on manifold bolts....)
Photobucket

(Notice black on spark plug boot. and looks like the manifold chipped by the bolt)
Photobucket

so its probably an exhaust leak....idk what to do now get new manifolds or check rocker arms and lifters?

Chris. Have I tought you nothing? Thats not a good way to set rockers. You have no way to be sure the intake is closed. Use the. Intake closed set exhaust, exhaust open set intake.

Looks like you found your tick though. $300 is about right. They e gotta pull the manifold and extract the broken bolt which can be very trying. Looks like he manifold isn't broken. Lots have that little chamfer.

Doesn't look too bad at all. Hit the manifold bolts with some PB Blaster overnight, pull the entire manifold, and then yank that bolt with vise-grips or any extraction tool.

Hehe and hope the other bolts don't break off!
