I'm looking at buying an '86 Z28 to use as a parts car. I'm wondering if there is any interest among my fellow crewbies for parts you may want or need? If it runs and drives and isn't sold yet I will most likely buy it.

http://s661.photobucket.com/albums/uu335/Caleb14/

I should know more soon, but it looks to be a running and driving 305TPI car with a 700R4. Supposedly a new engine. I don't know about the interior or rear end yet. If it's in nice enough shape I may not want to part it out, in which case I'll probably be painting and re-selling it

If I buy it and part it I'll need to make at least some money back to offset the cost. I don't need many parts from it. Would anybody be interested in anything?

Maybe the 140 speedometer. Not the cluster. Just the speedometer itself. Trip odo on mine doesn't work.

Not to hijack this thread, but the odometer problem is common and usually easy to fix. It's a broken plastic tab that allows the shaft to move up and the gears don't mesh.

How many miles are on it? I might be interested in the rear end if it has disc brakes and the right gear ratio.

Yours being a 91 would have the VSS originating from the transmission, on the 86, it comes from the back of the speedometer. Part of the difference between electronic and cable driven speedometers.

Yes sir its on the transmission, but apparently there are two different sensors, can't remember what the difference is between them. one costs 100.00 the other around 50 thats all I remember. price isn't very helpful. But any way it depends on the numbers stamped on the case, but my fat butt don't fit under it well enough to make out the numbers, so maybe next time its on a lift I'll get those numbers. Or if I had a deal waiting on me I could try again to crawl under there.

Just tired of not knowing how fast I'm going. Gonna get a ticket one day.

One style VSS uses the speedo gears. The other style has a reluctor ring.

All the ones I've seen on T5's are Speedometer gear based but that's just what I've seen for F-Bodies.

If there are two numbers for two wire plugs into your trans, the other is the reverse light switch.

That 86 won't even have a VSS on it, we should probably quit hi jacking this thread.

Back on topic, is the car an auto or 5spd?

I'm going to call the guy today. Looks like I have interest for parts... It wouldn't be worth it for me to buy it just for what I need but if I can part it and sell some parts I think I'll make out OK in the end.

If he hasn't sold it yet and it runs I'll buy it.

All I know is it's an '86 TPI car, which means 700R4 and if it had G92 it got 3.23 rear end. Else it's a 2.73.

I'll keep ya posted.

I don't know anything more than what you can see in the pictures and that it's a 305TPI 700R4.

I just called the guy and left a voicemail, in addition to the email I sent yesterday afternoon. Hopefully he gets back to me soon and I can figure this deal out.

Possible interest in:
Steering wheel w/hardware - 91RSVert
Speedo - Quasitraction
Rear end - dlp
Hood with louvers, maybe interior parts - 91camaro_rs

As an aside, the tach in that car is the wrong one. I wonder if it has a different cluster than stock? The '86 305TPI should have yellow at 4500 and red at 5000. That car has yellow at 5500 and red at 6000. Anyone have a car with that redline? Seems higher than most I've seen/heard of.

That's an 80 psi oil pressure gauge in the tach, that with the 5500/6000 yellow/red lines are for a V6 car. The tach and oil pressure gauge at least are from a V6.

on the topic, I wonder if the tach even works. I thought V6 and V8 tach's required a different amount of resistance.

I had a V6 tach in my car at one time. Used to jump all over the place. nowhere near accurate at all.
