Now that the gremlins have been repaired on my 87 IROC, I plan to proceed with purchasing a good set of heads. The current set that are on it are 23 degree Trick Flow twisted Wedge heads that were sold back in the mid to late 90's. The valve springs are shot and I think the guides are bad also.
I am under the impression that AFR still makes the best heads for gen1 SBC's, do you agree?
I know head performance is based on the short block and cam. The current set up is a ZZ4 shortblock with a HRC with a Comp cam that has .488 lift on the intake and .509 on the exhaust. I am willing to go with a cam in the .525 range with the new heads. Last time I checked the ZZ4 came with flat top pistons and the TF heads had a 63cc chamber - 9.8 ish to 1 CR.
So, should I buy a set of AFR's? Which set?
The used TF heads will be refurbished and installed on my wifes 1990 IROC vert. The previous owner installed a rebuilt 400CI SBC with the 1990 305 heads. The refurbished TF heads should wake it up |

If you can sport the dough I'd love to run a set of the Brodix IK210.
You might think of a bigger cam yet though. Look at my garage I think all my specs are there.
AFR are good, if you go aluminum and don't plan to force induct it, if your heads are 63/64cc now look for some 58cc heads to bump compression to 11:1 _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

In hindsight, I should have worded the title diferently. I am not rich, just have permission from my wife to sink another two grand into my car.
I dont plan to dump a ton of money into the car, but really think the heads are a limiting factor in the current performance. When choosing the parts 10 years ago the goal was to build a car that would run mid 12's at 110ish MPH. The car has been down the track about 6 times, the best pass was the first. 13.20 at 104 MPH. 60' time was 1.80.
The second day it was running it put down 298?? RWHP and 350 PF of tourqe to The Carb Connections rear wheel dyno. The numbers were very consistant over the 10 pulls made.
The transmission blew up the next day. The tranny was rebuilt and had lots of problems that led to the valve springs going away. Nothing like matting the throttle and having the tranny downshift to first gear resulting in RPMS over 7K.
The springs that came with the heads are 1.25" diameter, supposedly good for up to .510 lift per TF. CC size is 63CC. The cam in the car has .509 lift on the intake side, .488 on the exhaust.
The srings are toast now and I am not sure if the spring pockets in the head are cut for 1.47 springs.
If the heads need any machine work to install better springs I plan to install new heads. I would like the car to run mid to low twelves at 110 MPH plus with the stock ZZ4 shortblock, NA.
I dont mind buying another cam along with the heads, just dont want to have to change rear end gearing, transmision or intake. Cam and heads only. |
