|

Hi guys/gals...
I have a question on a 454 I'm going to look at, the guy said is was recently rebuilt (maybe 1000 miles) he said it developed a oil leak and soon after it had a slight lower end knock, he also stated once he heard the knock he parked the truck...
Now my question, do you think it was just a spun bearing, where new crank bearing and rod bearings is all that is needed, or do you also think I would need to replace the crank? The guy said he thought the crank was stock grind if that helps...
Any thoughts?

If he spun a bearing after 1000 miles it needs a full rebuild.
You'll need rod and main bearings AND a machinist to check all the clearances and how true the main journals are inline. You probably wouldn't need a new crank unless it's cracked, but you most likely will need to turn the crank and use an oversize bearing.
Plus I'd be looking at a new oil pump and verifying that all the galleys and oil passages are clean.
Then I'd be thinking to myself.... hmmm if they didn't do the crank right, did they hone the cylinders right? So I'd have a machinest check the bores and so on.
How much does he want for it? (please tell me it's not going in the thirdgen...)
Sounds like it could end up way more trouble than it's worth if he's going to price it in the "rebuilt" cost chart.
Plus if a bearing spun, all that metal flowed through the motor. That means new Cam bearings, Camshaft ,Lifters. ETC. |

The seller is only asking $250 for carb to pan, plus full exhaust, and no this one isn't going in the Camaro, will lbe going in my truck, it currently has a good 350, but I carry a full size camper, just wanted the extra power that the 454 would supply. _________________

I'd go take a listen to it. It might be a lifter tick or something unrelated. Only one way to find out for sure!
Same year of engine as your truck? Mech fuel pump? Would be a sweet little swap if everything lined up and was the same. _________________ E30

Trucks a 77, the 454 is an 85, should still be direct swap, guess the first thing would be to question the owner a bit more, how long did it knock before shut down...also did the knock go away after oil was added. then put it on the stand flip it over and pull the crank to see what shape it's in.
hope it wasn't run long, maybe I can get by with replacing bearings and a good ceaning, toss it in, add oil run for a bit and change the oil see what happens... _________________
