Ok, well once again another question about my el camino
i got it all back together, IT IS TIMED CORRECT, and everything sounds great at idle..
if you go to give it gas or get it into higher rpm's it will backfire.. is it my carberator or is it somthing else?.. i have a brand new just out of box edelbrock intake.. and a suposibly rebuilt carb.. the carb is going to get replaced if i can ever afford a brand new one or if someone has a used one laying around for a ok price that they know works, if so please let me know
the carb's a 750 cfm.. bit too beefy for my (as far as i know) stock motor..
any help is much apperciated _________________

That carb is WAY too big for a 305 or 350 in stock form.
Unless it's a Q-jet.
By backfire... do you mean out the exhaust or through the intake?
Through the intake is usually an indication of valve train, too much timing, or a lean condition. |

it's a carter.. and it goes "pop!" then spits out flames outta the carb..
didn't know it was possible to have a bad intake... this one's out of the box new... and the heads are rebuilt.. maybe i need to adjust the rocker arm's?
it's a 400 block i know that much.. _________________

Sounds like timing/firing order to me.
Or an intake valve is stuck open.
Rechecking timing and firing order. And adjust the rockers. |

Make sure you've set timing up on the #1 TDC COMPRESSION stroke. And not TDC on the exhaust stroke.
1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2!
Numbers to live by.
And don't set the rockers by the book.
Exhaust Open - Set the Intake Valve
Intake Closed - Set the Exhaust Valve
If it's a hydro, set it to 1/4turn past zero lash. No farther. |

Don't know about your area, but there are some Carbuerator shops in town here that do well with trade ins and can help setup a carb to your particular application.
You might see if there is a place like that around your area. |
