Well I did still find the time to do a little mod on my car too
I now have a sporty spedometer... it says I can go like 140 mph!!!! I just might have to see that happen
I had so much fun disassembling a red car for parts that I decided to do it for mine too!
Up next (probably even before the keyless entry) hood swap! The power buldge hood is technically blue right now but... it needs to be a better shade of blue. So hopefully soon. _________________

LOL @ Rodney.
Cool on the speedo Jenn. Your car is now faster than mine, mine only goes to 110. |

| There is certainly something envigorating about pegging a speedo. Even if it is 85mph. |

One of my better appearance upgrades to the 89. It sports a 145mph Z28 speedo. I only recently had the speed limiter disabled, so top speed isn't 112 anymore _________________ 92 Camaro

In which car??
In the 92 I have a Dakota Digital package where I sent the whole instrument panel to Dakota Digital and they refitted the thing with digital gauges - they sent the new piece back with a bag full of the old gauges and circuits. Really expensive even in 2002/2003 when I had them do it.
In the 89, I bought a Z28 gauge pod from Paul (Twilightoptics) and it was plug & play. I later painted the metal bezel red to give the appearance of red rings around the gauges - I painted the back of the same bezel a metallic silver to reflect more light from the rear.
An upgrade similar to my 89 for you would be pretty easy. I think there's only one year that's different from the rest prior to the electronic speedos, the Pontiac guys would know better than me. Also, if you have idiot lights and want to change to gauges (oil, water, battery), you will also need to change the senders on the motor, which isn't hard to do. |

From what I remember 86 was the only year for birds to get the newer style grid backed 140mph speedo and still use the cable drive. After that they went to an electronic vehicle speed sensor. (which wouldn't be hard to splice into the system but definitely not plug and play)

| Then I'd be surprised if they ever came with the 140 speedo and a cable drive. I thought 85s all had the standard 85 mph speedo. |

You're probably right Ian.
I know 85 was the last year with the old taillights and the cable speedometer.
All the 140's I've seen are Electronic in firebirds.
I know the camaro gauge cluster Al has in his 89 you could order from the factory, but was dealer installed. RPO was U21. I don't know when they started offering that. I'd guess around 85 when the first TPI cars came out.
*EDIT*
In 87 they had the 140 speedometer in IROC's equipped with L98's (possibly LB9's, but I've heard it both ways), but they had the KPH marks and did not say "Z28" in the center of the bezel. _________________

My '87 LB9 came with the 140 speedo with the blue inlayed letters.
My '85 had the speedo that could only be purchased over the counter that said Z28 with no KPH. |

I always thought the speedometers like Al's with the Z28 logo and no KPH were also replacements in earlier Z28s that came in for factory gauge repair. I didn't know they were sold over the counter as well.
I have an '87 L98 IROC 145mph one in my Z. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56
