Alright, I run 3desktops and 1 laptop on a regular basis. One of my older "leftovers" machines is acting up. So my plan is to rebuild my main machine and trickle down the parts to the others.
The one I am trickling down is a p4 3.0@800fsb, 2gig ram, 256agp4x video, 500w gamers power supply.
Now, I havent built any pc's since this one, so I havent kept up with the latest fancy crap. All I know is they have knocked down the processor speeds and started stacking duals and quads.
I fully plan on sticking with intel processor
I plan to order from newegg.com unless someone can point me to cheaper/better place.
I dont game, I mostly do image editing and watch videos... My color must be very good and accurate!
So, any suggestions on parts that are good or very bad? I know I gotta get a processor, mobo, ram, and video. Maybe a new power unit? _________________ 2008 GMC Z71

Good call on sticking with Intel. I have had a lot better luck with Intel stuff vs AMD.
As for the rest of it, I don't keep on all the PC hardware all that much, but generaly I would try to stick to a name brand. And if you are doing lots of image/video editing. Get as much processor and RAM as you can afford. Video editing especialy is very processor intensive. |

What is your price limit? Right now with my computer i still plan on adding more ram and another video card but here are the specs of my Gaming Machine:
Proc-Intel Q6600 Quad Core 2.4ghz
Mobo- Xfx 780i Tri Sli
Ram- 2X2gb G.Skill Ram
GPU- Geforce 8800GTS
Hdd- 2 320Gb Seagate 7200rpm -SATA
PSU- Corsair 520W
Case- Antec Nine Hundred
Cpu Fan- Tuniq Tower
Rom- 1 Asus DL Dvd burner, 1 Asus Dvd player-SATA
Total i spent around $1200 + $300 for my Samsung 22" lcd monitor. It depends on what your willing to spend and for what usage, I use mine a lot for gaming, checking e-mail, building my Zune library. |

Price is honestly as cheap as I can get away with because I'm still fighting bankrupcy.
This is the processor I have picked so far...

this is the mobo so far...

Still need to pick some ram and video. I'm thinking 2 gig of ram as what I have now seems to be fine, but wrong type. The video needs to be best in color as it can be. Doubt it needs alot memory as this 256 I have doesnt seem to be giving any problems(again, wrong socket).
Someone else helping seems to think my gamers 500w psu isnt enough. Yet these new processor are to use less then what I have now. Let alone if I go with ddr3 ram, it uses less as well. |

Depending out how old it is it maybe be a little true, Most psu now come with extra 6pin, 6+4pin connectors for Pci Express video cards. But most cards now come with an adapter.
Yet it should be fine for what your using it for. I power my computer with 3 120mm fans, 1 230mm fan a power hungry gfx for hours on end with my Corsair 520w. You wont need much over 500 unless you plan on running multiple GPU cards.
When looking for a motherboard you have to be careful, becuase i know my motherboard comes with a 6pin for extra power to the processor instead of the old 4pin for Pentium fours.
As for the stuff you have pick. Stay away from Asrock, And for your proc look into the Intel LGA775 E8400 Wolfdale. This cpu is a very good cpu, in a lot of cases it beats out my Intel lga775 Q6600. |

Id like to get an Asus board. But I cant seem to find one that will work with a decent price.
That processor is a wolfdale.
Power usage.. Processor, ram, 1hd, 1dvd, video, internal memory stick reader, 3 fans. Thats it. |
