Well, almost.

I got the parts from Ian cleaned up and the rotors resurfaced. I found a shop in Poulsbo to turn a set of rotors down into hubs, and a nice job he did. Ian's calipers cleaned up nice, however they had their share of scratches and stains, so I put some paint on those and sanded the letters clean. I replaced the wheel bearings and races in the hubs, now they need some longer wheel studs (on order) - they also painted up nice. Before I get to go much further, I'm waiting on the caliper brackets for the spindles, then I can modify them and get on with the swap. I still need to meet up with Ian to pick up a set of caliper banjo bolts I had him order for me.

Here's what stuff looks like at the moment...

Looking good. Sorry if this has been posted already but are you upgrading the V6 car or the V8 car?

You know, I don't remember posting which car these are going on. Laughing just for the record, they go on the V8 car. Except for what's done now and new shocks and springs in the future, the V6 car I think will stay as is. Cool

that'll be a nice upgrade, do you re-use the third gen caliper hose with that setup?

Wow. Those look a lot better than when I gave them to you! Laughing

My car is down again otherwise I'd run the bolt out to you this weekend. Say next weekend work for you?

The plan is to use the same hoses - they fit, just need different banjo bolts.

Ian, no problem for next weekend. I could also make it out to you if that works.

Just a little more today. I picked up the longer wheel studs for the hubs I had made and put them in. Then, just out of curiosity, I fit one of my wheels with rotor and hub and set a caliper inside. Looks good with these wheels and I have no clearance issues so far. Until I receive the caliper brackets, this is about as far as I can go. Hope to get more done next weekend.

Is this a race to get finished Al? I have to turn my rotors down and then buy the new rotors. Kind of weird we are all doing brake upgrades.

I dunno, maybe Laughing

I still have to wait on caliper brackets, then modify the spindles I pulled from the JY.

The owner of the shop (Jantz Engineering www.jantz4x4.com) knocked off an hour labor from the final invoice when I picked up my hubs. "The guy I had turn those down does really good work, but he just takes too long." He primarily does 4X4 and has a really nice garage with 3 RV sized bays and at least one lift. He's also willing to make adjustable lower control arms and panhard bar, since he's local to me, I might take him up on it, depending on budget.

I got my caliper brackets and their hardware today. Looks like this weekend I'll go at modifying my JY spindles. Any suggestions on what to use to make the cuts?? Drill & tap shouldn't present much of a problem, just need appropriately sized drill bits and taps.

Thin cutoff wheel in a right angle grinder. Still my favorite tool of all time. Took me about 10 minutes to get both spindles done. The top caliper provision is the hardest to cut off cuase its at a weird angle. You basically have to cut flush with the outside of the spindle, and then in from the front side. I can post a pic of how mine look if you need it.

Thanks, that mighht help. Instructions with the brackets have a set of grainy B&W pictures to show before & after product. Only problem with their photos is the before pic is one side and the after pic is the other side Confused Might not be so bad if it wasn't so grainy.

I was able to get an angle grinder today and cutoff wheel to modify the spindles. Makes short work on that cast iron. Now it on to drilling and tapping the dust shield holes. The directions call for metric drill bits (8.5mm & 12mm), and taps to fit the supplied bolts. I don't have any and they seem hard to find today. I suppose I could use the SAE equivalent drill bits since the hole is to be tapped anyway.

What seems hard to find (today anyway) is the metric taps. I can find sets that have the smaller of the two sizes (10X1.5) I need, but I also need a bottom tap in that smaller size. The larger tap (M14X2.0) nobody seems to have today. Maybe after the holiday I can find something...

Here are my spindles after I hacked them up with the cutoff wheel, cleaned them up and put some paint on them. I still need to enlarge the dust shield bolt holes and tap them to accept my caliper brackets.

Since you are putting new bolts in, just use a 1/2" standard bolt/tap. No reason why you need to put a 12mm in there. Thats what I'm going to do. You also may need to cut off your steering stop tab that hangs down. Mine gets in the way of the caliper bolts.

I thought about that too, but my bracket came with all the bolts. Since I have to get the taps anyway, I may as well get the ones for the bolts I have. Tacoma Screw is basically down the street, I'll give them a call and pick the stuff up Saturday - they're open until noon. I'll take a look at the steering stops when I start to get things assembled, so far they look like they'll be fine. Looking at the picture you posted in your thread, your brackets are different and clock the calipers a little farther toward that steering stop.

Where did the brackets come from? Wasn't it Ed Miller? All the stuff I've seen him use are Standard bolts for the bracket to spindle. The Calipers all seem to run metric bolts but the holes are obviously already tapped. Be careful if you're going to change bolt size... If he picked metric stuff it's gotta be for a reason. Sometimes he uses allen button cap heads for clearance issues so see if you can latch up the caliper and check where the holes are and where the bolt heads will ride.

No, not from Ed, but probably should have. They came from www.kore3.com . I've had them assembled as much as possible without drilling and tapping the dust shield holes and there is no clearance issue with the caliper or with the hub.

Plenty of clearance with the caliper and when set against the spindle, there is plenty there also.

Interesting setup. The carriers look like they didn't change much from C4 to C5.
