Well, after having my camaro having so many problems, and tired of driving an HHR (had a devistating loss to a mazda 6) i've picked up a '73 el camino.. haha, not gas friendly, but a fun car.. i couldn't pass it up, having only paid $250 for the car.. run's, smokes a bit.. going to run some STP through it and see what it does first.. the car itself is in overall fair shape for as old as it is.. it was painted 2 years ago, paint doesn't look very bad.. body's in great shape.. 400/350 turbo.. i'll get some pics up when i get a chance... just figured i'd share with the crew my little finding..

unless it has the 5"x5lug spacing like the trucks, I believe most GM stuff was 5x 4.75" spacing.

Elcamino's are same as chevelles. So you can find lots of info on chevelle forums. Try Team Chevelle its a great site.. good info and helpful people.

I might have to second that. Just drive it like you stole it.

Team Chevelle forum is where I used to go when I had my '68 El Camino.

I stuffed the rear wheel wells with a low riding stance. If my memory serves me I had 16x9.5 rims and 295/60-R16 tires. I think the backspacing was 5.5 inch. I measured out the wheel well to figure out what size tire I could manage without rubbing. Then I got a rim width to match, and measured out what backspacing would be required to center the rim in the wheel well. Worked perfectly with a finger width clearance on both sides. I used 15 x 7 up front with a tire shorter in overall height. Something like 215/70-15, but I just can't remember. I kept the backspacing low so the wheels weren't a mile inside the edge of the fender.

The larger diameter rims in the back made the larger tire look proportional to the front. I used Moroso drag springs up front to lower the ride, and air shocks in the back to level it off. The stance was awesome and the rear tires had great traction with the Powertrax locker, 3.73 gears, and South Side lift bars. It would rip off very quick 0-60 times but slow down quite a bit on the freeway. But it was a 4000 pound brick so what can you expect?

The El Camino is very deceiving. Most people think it is light in the back end but in truth it has better weight balance than the Chevelle. A properly
equipped Elky can really launch hard off the line.

I know this tread's worthless without pics.. and i think it's the second ugliest, the next gen is worse to me.. just a matter of oppinion tho.

The car itself is in sunnyside right now, i was going to drive it home that same day, but the tabs where expired, so on friday i should have some pics up of it, for $250 i think is a killer deal, idk how to use my cellphone to send pics to my e-mail, i'll go look in my book on how to, if i even have that feature active..

Does your state still give out tickets if you just bought it and are driving it home?

Here, if you show them a BOS and its fairly obvious you are between purchase town and home, they will let you go. Now if you go driving it around while trying to repair something, they are on you like flys on glue.

FTR, I drove my camaro home 400+ miles w/o plates and just a BOS.

Eek, thats sketchy. I bet they would haul you to jail here. Stupid rules. Its a $150 ticket (I think) for expired tabs, couldn't image what they would get you with for no plate or proof of ownership. Gives me goose bumps just thinking about it. Not to mention the no insurance thing. Thats $500 here. So right there you'd net almost $700 not including the other stuff they'd get you for. Maybe I'm just to cautious and skitterish....

Hehe, southern cops. Laughing

You gotta be carefull in in Washington about the whole expired tab thing. AFAIK any vehicle with tabs that are more than six months out of date is subject to being impounded.

Since you bought it privately I don't really know how much leeway you have for "limbo" period. I wouldn't buy a private vehicle without current tabs, but in the case of a classic, we usually end up having collector plates on them anyways.

Get some pics! Very Happy

Yesterday I realized my tabs had been expired for a couple months and I had the new ones in my center console. Laughing

I have such a bad memory.

the whole tab thing is getting taken care of tomarrow, i gotta wait for my grandpa to get back into town since the car's going in his name and under his insurance, i thought about driving it down here, then i thought... not smart... the car smokes.. not horrible.. but enough to notice... still get's up and goes like no other, so idk if it's the rings.. or if i run cleaner through it, if it might clear up.. but i mean worse case i go have the heads redone..
