| Does anyone have any idea's on how to run a 3" diameter driveshaft? I would like to run a larger shaft so I can get bigger yokes and knuckles but I was told that it will hit the torque arm. I'm going to pull the torque arm mount off the tranny and onto the crossmember but don't see anyway to clearance the axle side of the mount without cutting the middle out. |

| i thought i was still a direct bolt in for a three inch drive shaft. You would really only need a .25 inches of clearance. I could see a problem if you had a rave shift loop though. |

| So its no problem? The guy at the driveline shop made it sound like it wouldn't fit. I'll get some data to him and let him know. |

| I haven't measured it, but I believe that the aluminum shaft from a '99 SS in my IROC is 3", and it fit fine with both the stock 700R4 setup, and the T-56 swap. |

Well I don't know what he was worried about. The real problem is this, my TH400 has the truck tailshaft so it has the u-joint bolted to the rear of the shaft. This means I have to run a slip-yoke in the middle of the driveline like a 4x4 truck. If I can fit 3" then I can get the burly slip yoke and I'll never have a problem.
Its worth it for me to keep this tranny instead of buying a used one from someone. If I bought a new one I'd have to have it rebuilt and I don't want to pay to have it done. So $300 and it will be running versus $1500+ to get a new one. |

The Ls1's had 3" shaft and they fit. Also, I think the alumns that came in a few of our cars were 3" also.
Really, its the joint at the rear that has the clearance issue, and it really cant/doesnt need to be any bigger then what we already have.
What you may have problems with is that slip yoke that your putting in the middle. How much bigger then 3" is that? _________________ 2008 GMC Z71

| K, I called him back and told him 3" no problem. So he's quoted me $380 with tax for a 1-7/8" slip yoke with rear u-joint that will work with 10-bolt or ford 9" if you swap the caps. Think this is the way to go? I would hate to spend money if there is a better way to do it. He made it sound "unbreakable" with my setup. Sure hope so. |

| You can use a slip style yoke in that th400. Just get a new yoke and seal, then remove the bolt. I've done it before with no problems. |

I run a 3" and it clears fine. Think Schultzy has a 3.5" and it clears fine with an aftermarket torque arm even which has less clearance than a factory. |

Huh, the guy I talked to said you can't do that cause it tears something up? I think he said the rear seal or something. I can't remember exactly what he said but he said it's doable but destroys a seal. I'll do some more research and try to pull it off to see what I can do.
The $380 includes a yoke for the tranny, 3" tube, 1-7/8" dia slip yoke, 3" tube, yoke for tranny.

Can someone explain counter-boring?

Sounds like a slip yoke will work? I don't understand the mods necessary to do it though.
| Quote: | | However, it will not slide in as far as it does on a passenger car transmission so, you may have to cut the end of the yoke off or have the driveshaft shortened. |

| The seal thats in the rear of the trans needs to be replaced.. The fixed yoke style isnt made for the yoke to slip back and forth. But without the driveline in, its just a simple pop out the seal and pop in the other style. |
