And when reinstalling the head, how can I clean the block surface? _________________

That means you either have no ignition in that hole or you are running way too rich. thats an impressive layer of carbon. Or is it oil? There is nothing you can do for the block surface except for scrape and then use a razor box blade to clean it off. _________________ E30

Based on your dyno tune.... way too rich.
Block clean... Brake Kleen, Scotch Bright, Razor blade. |

That's not my motor. Can all that just be cleaned out and be fine? Cylinder walls look remarkably smooth.
Roloc discs okay or is that too abrasive? _________________

| I usualy get the big chunks off with a razorblade, then just do a quick over with the scotch-brite pad on the die-grinder. You don't want to take material away though, just a quick clean with the scotch-brite, then clean it off real good with brake clean before putting the gasket on. |

| Get a can of seafoam spray. Spray it on the piston tops real thick and let it sit over night. Then try to clean it up. Get the big chucks off first. |

| I use a stake knife that I ground down the end to make it square as a scraper. This does not flex as much and works much better in my opinion. Remember to clean out the head bolt threads with a tap. |
