Before I get into this, I need some instruction. I know the caliper and rotor com off and I need to remove the differential cover and drain the diff. Not to sound like an idiot because I've not done this before, and the stupid question is the one you don't ask. Now that I'm in there, how does the axle release from the rear end? Once it's out, I think I can figure out the seals and bearings.

Al, you need to unscrew the locking screw for the center pin in the carrier. Then pull that center pin out.

Once that is done, you can pull the c-clip out. (you might have to push axles in just a bit to get the c-clips to come out easily.

Once the clip is out, then the axle will pull out.

No stupid questions.

Al, it has been my experiance that the locking bolt through the crosspin will be tight. A six point 5/16ths box end wrench is a good idea. Put the wrench on there and give it a couple good taps with a ball peen hammer in the right direction. Has worked for me everytime. Dewey is right, after the pin is out push in the axle and use a magnet to grab the C clip. Easy as fishin'.

DEFINATELY use a 6 point wrench on that 5/16's bolt if you don't you'll round it or break it completely...I even used the 6 point and the bolt broke leaving about a 1/8" of threads still in it.

If you rotate the whole carrier over, after you've loosened that 5/16's retainer bolt you don't even have to remove the pin all the way, you can slide it out far enough to where you'll have enough clearence to push the axles in, and the C-clips will drop right down on the bottom of the housing. Then you don't have to fish em out, especally if they drop down towards the pinion.

its all pretty simple and will make perfect sense when you see it. Cool

That center pin looks like fun to get lined up again once you pull it out. I am as far as starting to pull out the center pin, the locking screw was rather easy with a six-point socket. Once the center pin is out, you still have to rotate the assembly to get at the C-clips, correct?

yeah, you will, you will need to pull the clips out through the window in the carrier. A magnetic wand might help get them out once you push the axles in, so the clips are away from the edge.

I figured a method to push the center pin towards the pinion getting about 3/4 of the way out, while keeping the housing window facing top-to-bottom in relation to the housing. makes the C-clips drop inside the carrier on that bottom spider gear.

That's kind of what I was trying to relay in the last post.

I've been inside these axle housings just a few times. Mostly in the last few months.

That was pretty easy once I saw what I was doing. Chris, I did have to pull the pin all the way out, well it came all the way out all at once as I overcame the friction holding it in. Kind of a neat design, the center pin holds the axles apart so that their C-clips don't come out of the recesses they sit in.
