I have a 4th gen and a 3rd gen housing.
I also have a set of 3.23 gears, a 26 spline open carrier, and a 28 spline open carrier.
I got no problem putting em together for ya. You'll just have to add brakes. _________________

yeah? i dunno if i want to change the whole rear end, would it be easier? (than changing the ring & pin) _________________

Its pretty simple to do.
if your weekend is free, I could bring the stuff, come over and show ya.
Then we could find out if you have 26 or 28 spline axles, and swap the appropriate carrier. _________________

i believe i have the 26 spline axles. think they went to 28's in '89 or '90
3.23s would definetly feel much better! if you'd be willing to donate a weekend to help thatd be awsome! this is my only car tho id hate for something to go wrong and have me stranded _________________

| Chris. It's not that simple. You have to set the pinion depth if you put gears in a housing that they didn't come in. You'll also have to set backlash with the carrier. |

| And remeber, if you have ot change the pinion shims, you need a press. You should probably use a press anyway, and put new bearings in, fi you are going ot the trouble of swapping gears. |

| to do it right, it takes a special tool. Normally you can get away with using the shims from the housing the gears are going into, and that will put your right, and you could check it when you do the paint test. If you have to change pinion gear shims though, you have to press the bearing off, change the shims, and press the bearing back on. If you are going to put gears into your housing, you really need to use the shim pack from your housing, on the new pinion. So at min. you will need access to press that stuff. |

| You don't do gear swap on the car, you pull it out and swap the gears. When you press the bearings, the pinion would need to be out of the housing anyway. |

You can swap gears in the car. It's not that hard. Typically you reuse the shim from the pinion and then check your wear pattern. Different housing means different shim. Sometimes you get close enough to roll with it.
A pinion depth gauge is a nice tool but it's $$$$$. You still have to check your wear pattern. |

I've never checked the pinion depth before. It wouldn't be hard with a straight edge and a set of calipers, but my Yukon gears didn't even have the pinion depth stamped on them. Kinda hard to check when you don't know what your aiming for. Definately spend the $20 on a solid bearing spacer for the pinion.
Chris, what are you using to check the pinion preload? That can be very tricky to guess as it seems to take alot of force to turn with the 20 -24 in/lbs torque that it calls for. |

| As far as I know they don't put the actual depth on them. You need a gauge that is set to a factory setting.. and then the mark on the gear is a +/- neutral type thing from that setting. |

never changed the pinion in mine. Just bought the torsen, marked the ring with paint and checked the wear pattern. _________________

| What did you use to compare the pattern with? If you change the carrier typically you don't need to check the pattern, just verify backlash like you and I did. |
