I have had the joy of installing an engine in a car in which I did not take the old engine out of. Whats more, the engine I am installing is one year newer and out of an IROC-Z. Only a few differences but since I have never worked on the TPI style small blocks, I have little experience from which to draw. There are a couple of things that I can't figure out what connects to them. Most things kinda figure themselves out when you start bolting stuff together but this one has me stumped. Please refer to the pics.

Thats a vent, there should have been a little foam filter that went on that nipple.

What about the vacuum hose in the lower pic then? The original one had this hose plugged off with a screw. I hate that. There has to be a home for this.

Looks like after the check valve, so it should have something to do with either HVAC or cruise control.

It's closer to the HVAC so I'll look around. I was more worried about the other connection since it gets buried when everything is zipped up. Any idea where to get one of those "filters" for the vent?

That looks like the EGR solenoid.

Thanks everyone. I didn't realize they would run a vacuum line that far. I know there are some open lines in the battery area and I have only found the small cruise control vacuum line. I think I will wait until I hook a few more items up and eliminate some possibilities. It would still be nice to know if that vent filter was available somewhere. I'm thinking a factory manual would sure be handy right about now.

Ian is correct about the line going to the orb of power. It's not merely for cruise control though, it allows the vacuum HVAC system to work properly as well.

My EGR solonoid vent is uncovered as well. Never gave me any trouble, but that doesn't mean it's a good thing. I mounted it on the heater box though, so that might help keep it clean.

I don't know if there's a difference on Pontiacs, since your battery is on the other side, but on my Camaro the vacuum canister was mounted inside the front fender somewhat below the cruise control.

The vacuum line was originally routed around the master cylinder, but I rerouted it up with the wiring harness that runs down the inside edge of the hood. It then drops down inside the fender to the port on the canister.

Well, I found the canister on passenger side

Then I remembered I had this.

I located all the hoses that connect to the canister and the emissions diagram just shows that hose in question at the top of the photo going to HVAC. It only shows it as one hose though and not the branch off.

I still have some vacuum lines around the battery and cruise control that are unaccounted for.

No, that's the smog canister. That line goes to the fuel tank IIRC. The vacuum orb will be under the fender, and will be a sphere with a single port.

The vacuum digram there doesn't have the orb of power. It cuts off before the check valve where it says "To HVAC".

Yup, the canister in your pictures is the evap canister. next to it in your pictures, you can see that flat black ball, that is the "orb"

Dewey, did they change the orb at some point? Mine looks nothing like the one with metal clips in his pictures? Is it a Pontiac/Chevy thing, or was it yearly, mine being an '87?

no, the thing with the clips is for the air filter. The little flat black ball between the charcoal canister, and the air filter box. Its hard to see in that pictures.

But I dunno pointy-acks. That may just be something else, that I am wanting to be the orb.

OK, I'll have another look. I'm just an old guy. If it has more than a vacuum advance and power brakes, I get confused

My 78 Z I could wire and plumb in my sleep. Back then the HEI was considered complicated. Very Happy

I do however still have the capacity to learn.
