Since I had the day off today and the weather is sort of cooperative, I took a trip to Airport Wrecking in Bremerton. I found the GFX panel I need for the right rear of the 89. More importantly, I found a disc brake rear end from a 82 Trans Am. No pics yet, but they will deliver it to me Tuesday. Looking up what Trans Ams of that year had, I'm going to be looking for different gears to put in to bring the fun factor up.

Rear end - $200
Delivery - $25
Core - $50

Total with tax was just under $300. I'm going to have a few fun weekends tearing into this thing. Cool

What was the ratio on that axle Al?

Don't know the ratio yet. If it's stock, then I'll have to put something else in. I picked it up mainly for the disc brakes. I'm don't even know yet if it's a 9 bolt or 10 bolt. I should have it Tuesday, nice that a junkyard will deliver for you Smile

You may or may not, on the early cars, if you had a L69, and a 5speed, you could get 3.73's with them. I would just pull the cover and check when you get it.

That's the first thing to do - open it up and see what I have. It came from an automatic car with what I assume was a 350 4bbl (but that could have been a replacement motor).

If it was an 82, there was no 350 options, it was probably a LG4 and with an auto, it probably has crappy gears then. It should also be a 10bolt, the 9 bolt wasn't an option yet.

If the rear end is stock for the LG4, then they'll have to come out as they should be 2.73 and I'll put in some more "fun" gears, then there goes the speedo cal Smile

Yeah, first thing I want to do with it is to get the brakes in working order and see what else up front I might need for the 4 wheel disc setup - prop valve, line lock, etc...

It arrived today, it's one of those with the driver caliper on the back side and the passenger caliper on the front. Looks like I need to replace everything to do with the brakes, but I expected that. I opened up the differential and found I have a posi with a 3.23 (13:42) gear, a nice little step up from my 3.08 Very Happy

looks good Al! You will like the step up for sure. that's what i did. I can definitely feel a little more pull up to about 40mph.

What's with the brake calipers being backwards like that?! Mine are the same way, I almost just flipped one over so they matched.

Hey, btw. if you bring in a rearend, would they refund you the core charge? if so, i have my old one sitting around you can have.

That's the way I think it works. I'd need a whole axle to give 'em.

The way I understand that brake setup was a money saver. GM did that so they could use the same caliper part number on both sides of the car. Confused

well mine's sitting under a tarp under my dad's carport. and he keeps yelling at me to get it out of there. lol so if you want it, pick a day and come and get it.

You know all, all the 4th gen rear disk brakes swap right in. I did a disk brake swap on my drum rear axle. Check my V6 sig for pictures.

Cleanup so far has gone pretty good... I got the brake stuff all removed, what a mess that was. The gear turns really free with hardly any play.

Here's what it looks like now. The oil on the floor is when I had the cover off, and some came through the open plug which I need to find a cap for.

Yikes, those brakes look ummm, good.

Should be nice with some new calipers, and some paint.
