So a friend of mine just bought a 70 C-10 that has a Saginaw 4 speed in it out of a 2nd gen camaro.
Reverse went out on him, so we need to replace that. I've never torn into one of these before, and I was wondering if any of you guys out there have ever taken one apart, or had to fix the internals of one and might be able to give me some pointers?
Last transmission I took apart was a 3 speed Ford Toploader, and that wasn't fun. _________________

| I had my muncie 3spd apart once which is very similar to the saginaw 3spd but more bearings/heavier duty. The saginaw 4spd isnt rated very high for strength. Most people dont even try to use them. I think you'll find all the bearings are just loose rollers, no cages. So its time consuming getting everything back together. You may have to make some wooden dowels to hold the bearings while you slip everything together. |

The saginaw 4 speeds were found in most 6 cylinder first gens, if I remember right. A v8 will tear one apart. I just sold a decent working one for 100 bucks. _________________

Saginaws are junk and weren't used much.
Are you sure it's a sag and not a T-10 or Muncie?
If it's a sag, he's better off finding a T-10 or Muncie. Period. |

To be honest, I'm not sure what it is, weither a T-10, Sag or Muncie. I've never physically seen the transmisson.
I know the prior owner and I seem to recall him telling me once its a Saginaw.
I'll probably have a look at it on friday and get back to you guys. _________________
