So my one wheel peel is not cutting it anymore, it was the biggest problem i had at the last autoX. braking good, turn in good, corner entry good, corner exit horrible! i am loosing lots of time having to backpedal and staying out of the throttle trying to keep the one rear tire from going up in smoke coming out of the corners. I picked up a rearend from a v6 5spd bird which should have 3.42 gears, that i plan on installing along with a posi unit. I am not sure what my axle spline count is? Are our 10 bolts 7.5 or 8.5? what series carrier would i need for the gear ratio i plan on installing? I am very clueless about all this, so any answers would be most appreciated. I have been looking for a used posi unit on ebay, but i need to know these specs. I have a pretty tight budget, so im trying to find a used posi unit, that will fit my application and rebuilding it and installing it with the 3.42's _________________ 1991 Firebird L03 T-5 |

The spline count we can't tell you. It will either be 26 spline or 28 spline, it would depend on the year the rear came out of.
If you have 3.42's you will need a 3series carrier.
Our cars are 7.5" or 7.625", but that shouldn't matter as they are basicly the same.
If you are looking for a used posi, I would suggest staying away from the factory auburn style, as they aren't rebuildable (at least not easily, or with easy to find parts). If you can find an Eaton you will be set, but they are scarce for cheap. A Zexel Torsen would do fine, you can find a lot of take-off ones from 4thgens. If you go this route, you have to have 28 spline axles, if you have a 26spline axle right now, you can always hit a junk yard and pick up 28 spline axles for cheap.

Thx alot, the 3.42 rear is out of an 89, my car is a 91. That really cleared things up, just one of the many benefits of the crew:) _________________ 1991 Firebird L03 T-5 |

89, they switched to 28 spline mid year, so that is one that you will have to pull it apart to find out. Worse comes to worse, you 91 will have 28 splines, so if you can find a zexel from a 4thgen, you can use the axles out of your 91 for sure, or you might get lucky and have 28 spines in the 89 also.

Yeah, that is a factory auburn. Hopefully it works out. If the clutch packs are slipping, you can't just fix it.

lol, there are no guarantees with these cars. But yes, all 88's should have 26spline axles. |

I got the carrier on ebay for $80. (its a bit of a story, but this guy descided to sell his "Eton Lmtd Slip" on ebay, and for some odd reason, I was the only guy bidding on it, lol.
The gears, are good old Richmonds, just ordered them from summit.

maybe, the 28 splines are a hair stronger. I am not sure what you mean by more options, you can get a zexel torsen for 28 splines, that is a take off from 4thgens, other than that the other options are about the same. You also have to find the axles if you switch. It is probably going to depend on where you find a deal, if you get a good deal on a 28spline, go for it, and then find the axles to match.
