| Brandon, it seems that the red STP additive has dried up around here all ready and I have to change the oil in my car tomarrow. What are my options? Do any oils still have the additives in thm? |

Rod,
Paul and I were talking about addatives a couple weeks ago (becuase my new truck needs an oil change in about 300miles) and he was saying he looked up somewhere that even the STP doesn't have the addatives anymore.
Maybe paul can clarify.
He reccomended the same oils, the Delo and Royal purple to me. _________________

Ian: GM has re-released the EOS. IT's also tested great. Similar in additives to the Crane lube.
Yeah. Miss read your post Rod.
The Red STP has less addatives than regular oil.
Find yourself some GM EOS or Crane Breakin Lube PN 99003-1 (Baxters has/can get it).
Run the Delo 15W40.
Or spend the coin for Royal Purple without any additives. |

what kind of oil do people here use?
i'm not sure if it's any good or not, but i use a high mileage (>75k)valveoline full synthetic with a bottle of lucas oil additive.
is this good?
what are some other good things to use? _________________ we all gotta start somewhere.... |

Really sorry if I'm going to far off topic here (delete the post if you want), but do all these zinc and additive issues matter to those of us running rollers?
I've been running straight Mobile1 5w30 that I had sitting from a year ago in the IROC, and I haven't bought any oil since after the change, but I used the last of it last summer, and I've been hesitant to buy anything else. |

i heard mobil 1 was pretty good, but the valvoline's the only one i can find in a full or blend synthetic that's said to be for higher mileage vehicles. _________________ we all gotta start somewhere.... |

| I put royal purple 5-30 in my engine and regret it only because shuks never has any 5-30. On my next oil change I will change weights. |

Rollers seem to be un-affected.
It's a flat tappet cam problem.
Even with a Roller, I'd still run Royal Purple.
5w-30 is a bit thin for the northwest and our motors. |

Yea, the zinc is needed for flat tappet. Which I have and need to protect for a bit. So is there any off the shelf stuff I can look for here?
I use dyno valvoline 10/30 or 10/40. |

Thanks Paul. Would you suggest 10w30 or 10w40 or is there a big difference? It never runs above 190 even in the summer. |

I think you're over analyzing.
1. Do you have oil? Yes? Good. That's the most important part.
2. Do you use the proper viscosity for your engine? Yes? Good. Now you know it will have proper lubrication for the clearances between moving parts. Don't use really light weight oils with viscosity modifiers. When an oil breaks down it will degrade to the lower weight.
3. Do you need to overspend on oil? Absolutely not. It's just a car from the '80s, not a state of the art perpetual motion machine. The engines were probably made in a low cost country with questionable metal quality and $1 per hour labor. It makes under 250 Hp on a good day. You're better off spending the extra money at Taco Bell. |
