I've heard they don't do much except advance the timing, give you more fuel, and lower the fan turn on temp. I'm going to learn to tune my own, starting with the header mod and advancing from there with each added mod. I've already soldered in the adapter socket for a new chip, now I just need to get the blank one to have programmed....

That's why they're working at an auto store. Why me why me?

For the price of a "tuned" chip I got all the stuff I needed to burn my own thanks to Schultzy and Moates.net. I also found that my TPI ran better with the stock BIN than with the Hypertech. WAY to much timing in that thing.

Listen to Dewey, he's probably done the most tuning on a TBI.

Don't know if it's the same for TBI, but for my car I needed chips, a burner, and an adaptor for the memcal. Plus an ALDL cable and laptop for datalogs.

Or you can go with an emulation type thing. A prominator like I have, there's also that unit I think RBob put together? EBL? A flashable unit that's cheap and sounds like it'd work really well.

Laughing Seriously, there are very few people that work at autoparts stores that know what they're talking about. I can think of a few exceptions in the crew but that's about it.

Sounds like what I'm going to piece together. I have the adapter soldered in the ECM with the old chip reinstalled into it (adapts the ECM to take the newer 28 pin chip, stock memcal is 24 pin). Now I'm starting to shop for an inexpensive laptop (probably used), then I'll get the other stuff.

Craigslist. Got mine for 80 bucks. Case is cracked to hell, and it was made in 1998, but it works fine for what I need.

There's a used computer store just down the street that I need to check again. When he has laptops, depending on the bells and whistles, they go for $75 to $300, all of which would be in my price range.

Don't waist your time with the hypertech, they are pretty worthless.

I would sure be willing to help out with tuning it, I bet between my PC and the stuff I have on Pauls laptap, we probably have a good starting point for a basicly stock TBI.

If you get the adaptor from Moates, and a chip or two, we can get rolling.

The stock chip won't work, the are UV erasable ones.

Go to Moates.net, he sells the chips and adaptors.

It will work just like the factory one but with a little more timing and a reduced temperature threshold to turn the fans on. I doubt that it will make any difference at all but there is an amazing phenomenon known as the butt dyno.

You see when you pay good money for mods that don't really do anything, the brain helps you justify this by sending signals to the buttocks while you drive which takes the sensations of the same performance that your vehicle has always had and magnifies them to make it seem as though a gain has been had. While this is a widely known and documented occurence in the automotive performance community, the justification reflex and desire for impossibly easy and cheap performance combine to cloud the judgement of the non-converted (see also quotes by P.T. Barnum). By the way, in case I have been too subtle, the butt dyno lies!

I don't say any of this to be harsh or a jerk but we are a community here; a family if you will. There is a great deal of experience with thirdgens and related modifications in this family. If we say something doesn't work or does not work as advertised it is usually because we have first hand experience and often hard data to back it up. Personally, I have spent a lot of money on snake oil and try to keep others from wasting their hard earned money doing the same.

I am glad that you managed to purchase this item for less than retail but IMHO if you spent $1, you spent too much. The only situation that I could see recommending a purchase of a Hypertech chip (or other brands that are the same thing) is if you found yourself in need of a stock chip and could not get one for less money than the Hypertech chip.

Really just trying to help. I have enjoyed your participation on the boards and hope to meet you soon.

Love from you uncle,

-Schultzy
