My friend and I are trying to remove his manual transmission from his '89 240sx to replace the clutch. However we've run into a bit of a snag. The tranny does NOT want to separate from the engine. It'll separate about and inch and a half but won't go any further. Somebody tossed around the idea that the bearing might be fried. the flywheel can still spin and the tranny is barely, but surely, hanging in there. In a fit of rage he even hooked up the tranny to his friend's winch on his jeep and tried yanking it off, snapped the cable. Does anybody have ANY suggestions? We're out of ideas and he doesn't really care whether he bends his input shaft or crack the bell housing (he took a hammer to it) we just want it off.

my brother has done this a few times back when he had a 91 240sx. i'll email him the link to this thread.

EDIT* i called him, here is what he had to say:

have you removed the dust shield? you have probably missed a few bolts... the two on the starter need to come out. those are easy to miss. other then that just pull REALY HARD and don't bend the input shaft. you have to pull harder then you would think for some reason.

Well, I looked up service procedure for the vehicle in Alldata, it says to take out the driveshaft and the shift lever, then the transmission comes out from there (alldata apparently isnt very specific).

Just take everything out that you can think of, and double check you have all the bolts completely out. Maybe you have the transmission hitting against the firewall?

Alldata says warranty time pays 2.6 hours, and standard time pays 3.6 hours. So apparently you dont have to take off ALOT to do remove the trans, just check the angle of the dangle Smile

is it possible you have a "push" style pressure plate where the clutch is pulled off the flywheel, rather that centrifugal force pushing the disc off the flywheel when the pressure plate fingers are depressed?

I'm sure this isn't the exact mechanics of how it works... I know the LT1 clutchs had a setup similar, and I know the Mark IV Supra's (86-92) have this setup.

Just a thought.

In which case you'd have to make sure the clutch fork is off the PP before removal or it wouldn't come out, just bend or some such.
