My Z28 came to me with some fancy wheels, and they are 15s, but Im not sure how wide they are. Is there a way to measure the width of the wheel with the tire on?
Also, I dont have a tire machine, any one want to help me change some tires around?
The motivation here is that my daily (the teal 91 with 16 inch wheels) needs new tires. I have really good tires on the 15 inch wheels that are on my black Z28. I also have some 15 inch wheels that match my 91, but they are 15s.
I want to buy some big, cheap, fast looking tires for the 85 Z28.
I want to take the tires off the Z28 and put them on my teal colored wheels.
Then put the teal wheels with the old tires off the Z28 onto the RS.
The tires/wheels off the 91 will be going away.
The same wheels that are on the 85 will be going back on, but with very large tires.
Can it be done? |

Bigger isn't always better. Getting tires properly sized for your car is the way to go. If they are factory 15x7 wheels, run a 235/60/15, it is about the best fit, you will get the best performance from that.

| Well, the z28 is my straight line car, and its still just as much about looking cool as its about going fast. |

Do what you want, its not my car. The proper size tire for that wheel size, is 235/60/15, it will give you the right bead seating, and won't be too bulged, too bulged and you distort the contact patch. If all you want is looks, go with what you want, but you can go so large, that it isn't safe to run them on the wheels, and IMHO 275 is starting to get to the point where I wouldn't feel comfortable running it if it was my car.

I run 255/60/15s BF Goodrich Radial T/A's on my back wheels and they are pushing too big. they look cool as hell and give me plenty of grip.
That's what i say you should go for if you are looking for cool big tires. plus you can run whites out and it looks total old school!

thanks i've put a lot of work into her to get her to that point. I found a better pic that shows off the tires.
The size of tires you can put on a set of wheels all depends on how wide your rim is. I wouldn't want to go any wider that 255 on mine although i can't remember how wide they are
~JAKE
PS the tire combo is 255/60/R15 rear and 245/60/R14 fronts on authentic centerlines.

John,
I'm gonna be needing tires as soon as soon as my car is back together.
I was considering a 215/60/15 in the front and 255/60/15 in the back on my stock RS rims.
Opinion?
Also strongly considering finding a pair of 15 or 16" Black Crosslace wheels....I think w/o the spoiler or GFX that will make my car look good. _________________

| 255 is the max that would put on 7" wide wheels. Most tire manufactures list the recomended wheel size for their tires. Dig out the summit book, and look at those, the list them there. |

I'm with john on this one. 255 is too wide on a 7" wheel. The Z28 I had was 255 in the rear with 15x7 RS rims and it was seriously bulgy. Looked awefull and felt really squishy in the back.
It is noteworthy to mention that no two tires are the same. Even though the tire width is the same between brands, some tire makers measure the 255 from the outside bulge, and some measure from the edge of tread.
But again, 7" is too narrow for a 255. I run 245's on my 16x8 and 18x8's and the tread is almost even with the lip of the rim. I found that a 225 looks the best on a 15x7. Just my opinion. _________________ E30

If its your daily driver, you want a common size too. 235/60 is common, and looks nice. IIRC stock is actually 215 or 225/60 though.
Also, I'll have to disagree with the lama boy. Bigger is not always better. If you have so much rubber that your rubbing fenderwells, and not using the contact patch agressively, your just creating extra friction on the road which takes more power to over-come. |

Alright, so a good combo would be a 215/60/15 Front, and a 245/60/15 rear? _________________

| 215/60 should be an easy find. Dunno how easy 245/60 is. Give it a try. |

Might find the 245 in a 55 or 65 series, maybe 245/55/15. _________________ 92 Camaro
