So i started swapping the ring gear over to my new carrier today and found that my new carrier is a different series. The one that had the crunched spider gears is a series 3, so the ring and pinion i am using needs a series 3. the new carrier i purchased is a series 2, when i put the gears on, the pinion gear barely touches the ring gear.
Now i have a few options:
1) is there a spacer for 9 bolts so i can move the ring gear over 1/4 inch? i haven't found one and have heard that there isn't enough shoulder to support one anyways.
2) buy a new ring and pinion. The problem is just more money that i don't have, as well as if i have a series 2 carrier can i actually get a 3.7 for a series 2 carrier?
3) swap the new spider gears into the series 3 carrier. this would be very easy considering the 9 bolt carrier splits in half. my concern is there are a few small grooves on the inside of the clutch housing where the cone clutch is due to the spider gears shredding, i'm not sure what the damage would be by using this one.
thoughts? I'm almost regretting this whole process

There is always something that pops up huh?
I have a spacer on mine. What I have is a Strange Engineering R5213 ring gear spacer in my V6 car. That let me put a series 3 ring gear on a series 2 carrier. You might want to check out their site or give them a call. They were very helpfull and informative when I called them.
Yes, you an buy a new ring gear. Its called a "thick crown" gear. It basically has the spacer built in. _________________ E30

Make sure and tell them it's a 9 bolt and not a 10 bolt. From what I understand 9 bolt parts are hard to find. |

I'm sure you know this at this point but the 3 carrier will hold 3.23 gears and up. The 2 carrier will only hold gears below 3.23, I don't think the 3.23's fit in the 2 carrier.
Good luck, I would check the local junk yards for a 3 carrier. |

So after much more research, its true that you can't get a spacer for a 9 bolt, they don't make higher gears for a 2 series carrier due to the unavailability of parts. I am waiting to hear hack from the new guy at 9bolt .com and see what he says, but i'm leaning towards option 3.
I can swap all the internals (spider gears, cone clutches, springs) into the old 3 series carrier. The grooves on the surface where the cone clutch mates arent' too deep, and they don't stick out so i don't need to worry about it messing up the cone.
From what i've read, the posi works by cramming the cones into the housing so both wheels turn. Having a few small grooves would just provide less surface area for the cones. Is my thinking correct on this? What damage could i cause by doing this? I'm not too worried if this isn't the "correct" way, as long as i'm not going to cause irrepairable damage.

Sounds exactly like my "auburn" limited slips in my cars. I think its a cone-clutch type.
it works okay but as you can see, it looks exactly like an open rear. So when I turn hard right the inside tire will spin. Straight line though and its pretty locked.
As long as the groove doesn't poke out or is rough I think it will be fine. Don't forget to put posi additive in when you put gear oil in! I don't know if you have a spring pack like mine (check out my V6 page) but you can get different weight springs to change how the posi engages. _________________ E30
