Help I broke a head bolt while removing my heads after the head gasket went bad. Car did not overeheat. I just put the socket on the bolt and it spung freely. I tried to drill and use and easy out but that did not work. Broke three wrenches.

Thinking of drilling out the bolt and using a tap on the threads. Is there another way that i Have not through of.

ENgine is still in car. its a 3.1 V6.

Well, best thing you can do really is to send it to a machine shop and let them hassle with it. They have all the proper tools to take the bolt out without mucking up the block or getting metal shavings in the cylinders, etc...

Depending on how messy you were with the drill.... get a square easy out in there. Lots of penetrating oil and let it soak. Might try a little bit of torch. Don't get too carried away as to not warp things.

If the easy out isn't broken yet, more lube and more heat

Use a product called PB Blaster. Get it at most parts stores. Soak it for a day or so, do this several times, let it it penetrate, then give it a try. It's great stuff. Much better than WD40 for something like this.

Can you take a pic of it and show us what you have to left work with?

I have soemthing similar called yield. Yes I have been soaking it. I will try to figure out how to post pictures. The bolt is flush with the top of the block or a little below that.

Yield should be decent. If the torch and easy out don't work, do you have a freind with a welder? I've welded nuts to the broken bolt before then used a wrench to turn the peice out.

Plenty to weld to. You just have to be careful you don't weld it to the block. Done it many times. Build it up a little to center the nut.. then weld the center in. Even when you do hit the block surface, beings it's cast it won't stick very well anyway. Still I'd try the easy out and plenty of heat first.

Easy out is now broken. Felt bolt starting to turn the easy out broke. Engine is going to be pulled. I am going to go back to my old motor and put rings in #1 cyl and put it back together.

Hmm, that means you'd have a spare 350 lying around then. I'm kind of looking for a 350 for my car actually? Rolling Eyes give me a pm if you want me to take it off your hands.

could you have drilled and tapped a reverse threaded smaller bolt into the larger broken bolt?

i think he means that you could use the reverse threaded bolt to get the regular threaded bolt out. as you tightened it, your tightening forces would be exerted as loosening forces against the larger bolt. eventualy one would break. the new bolt, the threads you tapped, or the old bolt would be loosened. i once got a thermostat bolt i broke off in the cyl head of a jeep out this way.
